The novel summaries serve as perfect aides memoires whilst suggesting themes and interpretations which will help guide any student of Austen. Likewise, the character sketches provide warm memories of Austen's fondly remembered Regency ladies and their love interests. The Pocket bible does not shy away from delving into the history of Austen herself, and it is fascinating to find out what befell the writer whilst she crafted these stories.
Despite being intelligently written, the book is far from poe-faced. Ivins' lively style ensures that the book is an excellent read both as a page-turner and a reference work to be dipped into. Whilst praiseworthy in its succinct and enthusiastic engagement with the subject matter, this Pocket bible also offers the reader a variety of trivia and amusing facts. You may well find yourself armed with a whole new arsenal of trivia with which to challenge fellow 'Janeites' when meeting to turn a Quadrille!
