4.0 out of 5 stars Evocative arrangements 19 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a selection of music from Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility and Colin Firth's Pride and Prejudice. They are about a Grade 5 or thereabouts. The sensitive and satisfying arrangements of Patrick Doyle's and Carl Davis's music are by Jack Long. The arrangements are also generously done - no tiresome repeats. At the start of each section you will find an explanation to where the music comes in the films in the style of a story board.
I also bought other books of music selections from film adaptations of Jane Austen's books, and this is the one I home in on and play often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Pieces of Music 24 Mar 2008
By Kendra - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book (not a cd as the other reviewer reviews incorrectly) includes music from the films Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice-- wonderful films with gorgeous scores.

The pieces here are arranged by Jack Long and include:
From Sense and Sensibility (music by Patrick Doyle)
Weep You No More, Sad Fountains
A Particular Sum
My Father's Favourite
Patience
All the Delights of the Season
Steam Engine
Willoughby
Excellent Notion
Combe Magna
There is Nothing Lost
The Dreame

and, from Pride and Prejudice (by Carl Davis)
Pride and Prejudice (opening theme)
Elizabeth Observed
Canon Collins
The Gardiners
Rosings
Farewell to the Regiment
Pemberley
Thinking About Lizzy
Lydia's Wedding
Double Wedding

I recently reviewed Jane Austen's World, which also included music from some of the films. These arrangements are a bit more difficult and most of them are for intermediate-level players. They do not include lyrics, but they do include a synopsis of each film and include when each song is used in the film. That's helpful if you know you like a particular piece but do not know the name! They are fun to play and not too difficult. I received the book this morning and have found some of them very easy to play. Some are a bit more difficult and I'll need to practice them a bit more. Still, it's a book I should be able to master pretty soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I had wanted! 22 Feb 2010
By David rogers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book and absolutely love it!!! The pieces are beautiful......
I've had several people comment or compliment the gracefulness and beauty that they heard in the pieces.
The book is exceedingly well written.
I enjoy playing Carl Davis's music more.I just like the way that Carl Davis(the Pride and Prejudice music writer) writes and arranges his music over Patrick Doyle's way of writing, but you must understand that's just personal preference. Please do not let my opinion of the music writers/arrangers hinder your buying this book!
The book has 11 songs from Sense and Sensibility and 10 from Pride and Prejudice(the 6hr version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth). I would say the level of the music overall is intermediate. Each song is different, some easier and others more difficult.I've been playing for over 10 yrs and I could pretty much play every song right away but needed more practice to make them "flow beautifully".
The music book is definitely a MUST for any Jane Austen movie fan or admirer! Or if you just want some pretty piano pieces.......

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music 7 Nov 2010
By GlowWorm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love this book. I consider myself to be an intermediate level pianist, but just barely. These songs are right at a level where I can play them happily and with practice, perfectly.

one of the other reviewers said this book contains the Italian Aria from Pride and Prejudice. It does not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music...printing problems 29 Mar 2014
By Daniel Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just received the book and have played through most of the songs. They are an intermediate/advanced level and I enjoyed reliving the music from the movies. There was one problem with the book, however, which is a printing issue. When I open the book, the first page I see is page 16, upside down. Pages 15 through the title page follow and then at page 17 the printing resumes right side up and in order. It was a bit confusing at first. Luckily, page 16 is the end of a song, so I just have to turn the book over for the first few songs. Annoying, but not impossible to use. I don't know how many books out there are like this, but I thought that I'd give the heads up about this issue.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful 27 Aug 2014
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was extremely pleased with this product. It was shipped to me sooner than expected and the book is wonderful. It shows you the scenes from the movies that the songs are from. It also has a great cover. The music steals the spotlight though, for it is extremely beautiful and although it presents as a challenge to learn, it is very achievable. I would not recommend this book to beginners but I think it is a great thing to have for any devoted piano player looking for interesting pieces to play. The music does not include the lyrics for the songs that are sung but it is also very great for singers.
