Book Description

Pride and Prejudice
The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, moral rightness, education and marriage in her aristocratic society of early 19th century England. Elizabeth is the second eldest of five daughters of a country gentleman landed in the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, not far from London.

Though the story's setting is uniquely turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' and still receives considerable attention from literary critics. This modern interest has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes.

Emma
Emma Woodhouse, aged 20 at the start of the novel, is a young, beautiful, witty, and privileged woman in Regency England. She lives on the fictional estate of Hartfield in Surrey in the village of Highbury with her elderly widowed father, a hypochondriac who is excessively concerned for the health and safety of his loved ones. Emma's friend and only critic is the gentlemanly George Knightley, her neighbor from the adjacent estate of Donwell, and the brother of her elder sister Isabella's husband. As the novel opens, Emma has just attended the wedding of Miss Taylor, her best friend and former governess. Having introduced Miss Taylor to her future husband, Mr. Weston, Emma takes credit for their marriage, and decides that she rather likes matchmaking.

Book Description

Three of Jane Austen's outstanding and hugely enjoyable novels, superbly read by three acclaimed actresses - Juliet Stevenson, Kate Winslet and Sophie Thompson.

About the Author

Jane Austen was born in 1775. She never married, and had no contact with the London literary circle; she, nevertheless, elevated her life, - a"little world of struggling clerical families, husband-hunting mothers and daughters, eligible clergymen and landowners, country fools and snobs" - into an enduring microcosm of the great world through her writings, distinguished by her "satirical wit and brilliant comedy, complex and subtle view of human nature, exquisite moral discrimination, and unobtrusive perfection of style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only a snippet of the real thing 19 Feb. 2012
By Dawn
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I would give this a 2 1/2 not a three star recommend. If you would like to get an idea of audio books then this is a good start. However, I don't think it is made clear enough that these are all ABRIDGED versions, so you only get a wee taste of the books and in my opinion far too much is missed out to make a fair understanding of these beautifully written classics.

1.0 out of 5 stars MORTIFIED 18 Jan. 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this collection together with the Bronte collection offered by the same company because I am studying this literature on a University course. I say this to compound my absolute total despair! The c.d's are WONDERFUL ! beautifully read, I absolutely love them. BUT and it's a big but....... I have had to return this collection TWICE now...... asked for replacement which came fine, the first one of the c'd's "slipped" would not play properly THIS box the second Pride and Prejudice c.d. is NOT P & P AT ALL but the second of Sense and Sensibility. I am currently awaiting my THIRD copy of the Bronte selection by this company, hoping against hope I can get ONE correct........if not that will go back again and I will just give up. I am very very upset about this because they are all I wanted, lovely versions of ALL books and as I have said beautifully read. I do have to add they have been edited and are not exactly true to text per se, but any edition be it c.d dvd or film always alters which is infuriating yes. Nevertheless they would have been most useful to me...There must be some horrendous defect in the manufacture of these items and I'm afraid to say I cannot possibly recommend them....... don't buy!
Since writing this review I have found no comparable recordings so am further distressed, what a shame.

Two months later and after a third attempt a very kind lady has contacted me from the company offering me the full set when a new batch has been produced. There clearly was a fault on the batch experienced by other customers. On this premise I would recommend the product to any Jane Austin fans and am very grateful for this follow up..........much appreciated

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh!! That's mean 20 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This struck me as quite an immoral trick. I bought this collection mostly because of the 'free audiobook' links. But the links are for Project Gutenberg, a collection of works read by volunteers. It is a website with absolutely no affiliation to Amazon or any professional publisher and whilst it is a lovely idea, they are read by ordinary readers with WILDLY differing levels of ability.

Since this work is all pre-copyright, I could actually have downloaded it for kindle free online (from many sites including ironically, Project Gutenberg) I know it's just a few pounds but i can't help feeling a little cheated.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Product - unfairly included in a blanket review 21 Sept. 2014
Format:Audio CD
Hi
Non of the previous reviews relate in any way to the collection produced by "Mini Audio Books". The collection was only published and listed this week (20/9/14) and non have been sold as yet. I am disappointed that poor reviews regarding other publishers may effect potential interest in our product. They are unabridged and well read by an excellent Librivox volunteer Karen Savage. We edit the original recordings for maximum listening pleasure. I am disgusted with Amazon for including our Audio Book in a blanket customer review that does not take into account our specific product quality. All our Audio Books are well presented and include a "NO QUIBLE" returns policy - If you are not "Completely Happy" with your purchase just return it with an instant refund.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Jane Austen Collection 6 April 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was looking for unabridged audio books, and the website did not make it clear whether what I was purchasing was abridged or not. So it was very misleading, it was for my wife and she was disappointed with the CDs. The information given was not clearly set out and was confusing. Sorry!

I ordered this collection based on the picture I saw that said the books are Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. These are the 3 audio books I got.
The description is obviously wrong, which is a shame as it puts people off ordering a great set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure pleaseure 7 Feb. 2010
Format:Audio CD
Lock yourself away and enjoy listening to these stories, I use my Nano or I phone, they are very relaxing to listen too, if you have watched the films then listening to these audio discs are just as good as you can slip away and imagine yourself in the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have 25 Feb. 2013
By Y.U.
Format:Paperback
This collection is a must-have for anyone who calls themselves a lover of literature. Jane Austen was one of the finest writers in English literary history. Her wit and powers of observation come across as sharp today as they must have done when she wrote them - maybe sharper, as her following is stronger today than it was during her life, thanks to the many TV dramatisations of her novels. If you've not read Austen before, this collection of her six classic novels is the perfect crash course. If, like me, you're already a devotee, it's good to know you've got the collection to dip into whenever the mood takes you. Which is often.
