Couldn't put it down!,

As a primary school teacher I am always looking for new quality writers to introduce my class to - this is the best children's book i have read for a long time. It is funny and keeps you guessing, making you want to read on. A couple of girls in my class have now read it (in super quick time) and there is now waiting list of those wishing to read it to. As well as being a cracking read in its own right, and completely original, it has also sparked there interest in the classics - making them seem 'cool'. I, and my class, can't wait for this writer's next offering.

Fab read!,

Northanger Abbey meets Emma, meets Grease! A charming debut novel from Kay Woodward, whose twinkly eyed observations about the world of her young heroine made me smile throughout the read. Just like Austen's heroine in Emma, Charlotte Penman is a determined match-maker, but this time it's for her own mother. But just like Austen's heroine in Northanger Abbey, Charlotte is absolutely sure that her mother's brooding French-teaching suitor is hiding a dark secret ... rather like Mr Rochester, in her favourite novel, Jane Eyre. With layer upon layer of references to classic novels, with a splash of high-school high jinks, Woodward's story is a millefeuille of fun (just a nod to the various cooking references in there). But my favourite characters are perhaps the ones I can most identify with. Charlotte's book club-obsessed mum and the headmistress with a missed vocation in comedy are the real stars of this novel. Surely there must be a spin-off series in there somewhere?!

A brilliant reworking of a much loved classic.,

Jane Eyre, the much-loved classic by Charlotte Bronte, has been given a modern-day revamp in Jane Airhead and the result is thoroughly enjoyable. The text is laugh-out-loud funny, easy to read and the story rattles along at a great pace. This is a novel that deals primarily with relationships - both family and romantic - and even though it's based on an old story, teenagers today will have no problem identifying with Charlotte's problems and dilemmas. This is a great way of introducing teenagers to writers such as the Brontes, and you don't have to be fan of classic literature to enjoy this, as it's a great story in its own right.
