Janacek written material was never easy to come by. One had to be content with whatever the Czech publishers would put out in English. This book is a world apart: it's wonderfully detailed and all Janacek's foibles and irritants turn up: one knows him better than any of his friends may have done. What astonishes me most is the way this fiery little man learned to keep his temper in the face of disappointment after disappointment and how badly he was treated for so long. How many more operas would have appeared over those early years of the century with some encouragement? It was a pleasure to lose oneself in this splendid book for many weeks. There isn't a dull chapter anywhere . . .

This richly detailed biography gives fascinating insights into the all-too-human Janacek drawing on a wide range of sources with particular attention being given to the many letters that Janacek wrote. The biography gives very valuable information on the context of Jancek's works and on Janacek's working practices and there are bonus chapters from other experts on things like Janacek's supposed gout. Very highly recommended.

Magnificent 9 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just coming up to the end of this hefty and intoxicatingly involving volume, and as with all the best biographies it will feel as if taking leave of a close friend - such a detailed, absorbing portrait of Janacek and his times does Tyrrell create. The central paradox of his life is brilliantly evoked: how almost of all of his asonishing music arose out of a fairly bizzare half-fantasy infatuation with a not particularly interesting married lady who spent much of her time ignoring both the composer and his music. The creative process is indeed a strange and wonderful thing. If you do intend to read this biography, however, just one piece of advice - make sure you have all Janacek's recorded works immediately at hand, since you will certainly not want to be without any of them as Tyrrell takes you fascinatingly and often wittily through their inception, composition and premiere. So, a magnificent achievement, recommended not just to people with an interest in Janacek, but in music, creativity, and, well, life itself.
