Review

"Wingfield offers pragmatic musical and textual solutions to changes and omissions in the score that have surfaced over time. Conductors should not embark on a performance of this masterwork without consulting this valuable handbook." Choral Journal

The origins of the Glagolitic Mass go back to before the First World War, as do those of some of Janacek's other late works - for example, the String Quartet No. 1. Read the first page

Glagolitic Mass is a problematic piece for performers as it was simplified/altered round its first performances because performers found it too difficult. There were issues setting the Glagolitic text (Janáček altered the text setting a number of times, incorporating mistakes and inconsistencies). Paul Wingfield set out to make a new edition, seeking to both restore the original intentions of the composer and regularise the text and its setting as far as possible without distorting the original music. Loved reading this book and getting behind the thinking and the process of compiling the new edition and getting background to the piece itself.

Janacek's Glagolitic Mass has fascinated me ever since I first heard it, ages ago on a vinyl recording by Karel Ancerl. There are now many recordings available, and if you too love this work then I recommend this book.

The product description says just about everything, but I can add that Wingfield's style is easy to read, something you can't take for granted in this type of book. Even when he discusses the quite esoteric topic of the Old Church Slavonic text he avoids jargon which might make it incomprehensible to the average music-lover.
