About the Author

When Jemma left art school she never thought she'd find her creative outlet in the form of baking but in 2006 she set up Crumbs & Doilies as a market stall and realised that her artistic urges were being fulfilled in ways she had never anticipated. Her cupcakes and cakes have been enjoyed by the likes of Paul McCartney, Keira Knightley, Lily Allen and even Gandalf himself, Sir Ian McKellen. Jemma and her team at Crumbs & Doilies past achievements include making 10,000 cupcakes to form a giant mosaic of a Japanese Cherry Blossom, as well as over 1,000 sushi shaped cakes complete with sushi tray, chopsticks and 'wasabi' buttercream!

This book looks mouth-wateringly delicious, I'm supposed to be trying to lose weight so part of me wishes I'd never ordered this but if I'm being honest I can't wait to get started.
This, like the BBQ book has the recipe on one page with a full colour photo of the finished item on the opposite page, there's also a page of hints & tips.
I spotted this book while looking around for a BBQ book for my husband, I can't remember the last time I bought myself a cookery book I generally get them as presents so I have a really good selection but I really liked the look of this. As with the BBQ book I noticed a complete content list wasn't given so I've added one at the end for you.
I don't generally review cookery books since by the time I've tried enough of the recipes to give a fair review I forget, yes, every single time, I always have good intentions but somehow I never get round to it but I'm making an exception since I thought it would be helpful to give a list of the recipes included and I'll add to the review as I try them out.
One tip I picked up from a friend years ago and I've followed ever since is to make little notes at the side of the recipes, I was horrified the first time I looked through one of her baking books to notice notes scribbled at the side of the recipes I couldn't believe anyone would write in a book, but she explained that you have a cookery book for life and you can forget so she wrote a little review at the side of each one. Turned out to be an excellent idea and one I've followed ever since, it really helps me because I've got a memory like a sieve so thank you Karen.

This is a brilliant book. The recipes are concise and easy to follow, and are very difficult to choose from, they all look amazing! So far, I have made the malteser, guinness and chocolate, mexican hot chocolate, and cinnamon toast cupcakes. All have turned out perfectly! The cakes are light and fluffy, I have only a few issues - you will probably want to reduce the quantities for the frosting recipes...the recipes make a lot...A LOT...of frosting. Not that I'm complaining too much, after all, the ones I've made so far have been gorgeous, but you do get a lot of leftovers. I thought maybe I was being stingy with it after making the malteser cupcakes so I went for it and dolloped it on the cinnamon toast ones - I still have a tupperware container full of frosting! I also ended up with a huge pile of toast crumbs, and that was after being very generous with topping the cupcakes. The other issue is with the jaffa cake - I tried to make the orange jelly, using the exact amount of agar flakes and oranges - the 'jelly' set as a revolting waxy mess. Was not happy with that, but maybe it takes a bit of practice to get it right?
Other than that, as I said, it is a brilliant book. I took the cakes into work and college and had nothing but compliments, especially the malteser ones, those went in seconds! You really cannot afford not to buy this book, it is an absolute steal. I have books that cost me 5 or 6 times as much and haven't produced anywhere near the quality cakes this book has.

This is packed full of both simple and extravagant cakes, some of these might not be for you, but a bunch of them will blow your mind! Some are a bit whacky and sound odd (earl grey & toast) but turn out to be show stoppers!

You really should get this if you want to move onto more interesting cakes and away from making the same old vanilla cupcakes!

I have only praise for the Cake Book. It is absolutely brilliant!
Love how she makes her way through more unconventional bakes and nails them every time. Great pictures and I really appreciate the way she talks us through the whole process so nothing can go wrong. Definitely fool proof recipes. So far I've baked the Cardamom and white chocolate cupcakes and the Mexican hot chocolate cupcakes. Superb! Way to go Jemma!

This is different from any cake recipe book I've had before....the ideas are so diverse, ranging from chai spiced to Mexican hot to lavender....the list is endless and I'm dying to try them all! Trouble is, as one of the other reviewers says, there's a dilemma if you're trying to lose weight! I'm ploughing ahead anyway.
