This is an excellent series, which when first viewing on TV I thought not as good as the first series in France. However, having watched it again on DVD, I feel that it is actually more enjoyable than the first series, especially as the rapport and friendship between James and Oz has now been firmly established, and with that it can clearly be seen that they are really enjoying themselves on this trip, which in turn, makes it more fun for the viewer.
The series as a travel programme is enjoyable, with lovely scenery and vistas, and an interesting cross-section of 'Californians', mostly posing as wine-makers, but in a couple of cases, actually making it themselves! From a wine information standpoint, I learnt something from it, especially about American wines, the climate, the varietals, and all in a fun, humorous, and enjoyable way.
I only gave this 4 Stars because it seems that the DVD's have been edited for 'Political Correctness' (One cannot risk offending anyone in Britain these days, can one?). There are some parts I clearly remember from watching it on TV that have 'disappeared'. One in particular was the very funny part where James had a 'Talking Plastic Jesus' on the dashboard of the Motorhome, (does anyone else remember the song 'Plastic Jesus'?) which he would activate for some 'Divine inspiration and wisdom', which was hilarious as 'Jesus' 'spoke' corny sayings in a tinny American accent - it was so kitsch that it was 'divine'. Sadly, PJ has been PC'd!
The bottom line is, I highly recommend this 2 DVD set, despite the fact that one of the participants has been spirited away!
