James Russell's books combine art, landscape and social history with biography and travelogue. His ongoing series 'Ravilious in Pictures' (Mainstone Press) celebrates the life and work of English designer, printmaker and watercolourist Eric Ravilious (1903-42), exploring the stories and characters concealed behind his mesmerizing paintings. James has travelled far and wide both to research the books and to give talks on the subject, and has enjoyed every minute; you can find descriptions of his travels, photos and other fascinating stuff on his blog, jamesrussellontheweb.blogspot.com.
You can't download 'Ravilious in Pictures', but you can enjoy holding in your hands a beautifully designed, impeccably produced BOOK that may still smell of ink.
The fourth book in the series, 'Ravilious in Pictures: A Travelling Artist' will be published early in 2012, but before then there is another treat in store, namely the gorgeous volume 'Paul Nash in Pictures: Landscape and Dream'. The first of two books on the great 20th century painter Paul Nash (1889-1946), it features well-known favourites and paintings that have never been reproduced before.
A keen cider maker, James has written two books on the subject, most recently 'The Naked Guide to Cider' (Tangent Books).
