Simply Excellent,

This review is from: James Martin by Wahl Hand Mixer 300W Silver ZX410 (Kitchen & Home)
I bought this in a rush when my previous hand mixer caught fire. I admit to using these reviews as a guide and was glad I had done so.The unit is simple, uncluttered and easy to use. Yes, I got a slight burning oil smell on first use, but this swiftly vanished. The slowest speed seems just fine when whipping stuff-just remember to use a slightly larger bowl to contain its enthusiasm. I particulalry like the turbo boost feature to add a quick bit of oomph when needed. Oh yes, it also looks quite good: a change from boring kitchen-white. Overall, I'd unhesitatingly reccommend this mixer, especially at this price.

Egg on my face, but no complaints,

I'm a fairly rational girl, not at all driven by her baser lustful instincts, so the fact that James Martin is a rugged slice of beefy sweet-making studliness didn't influence my choice of mixer. Well, not entirely. My old Kenwood's beaters finally cracked after a confrontation with a pound of butter straight out of the fridge, so I thought I'd give James Martin's offering a go. I'm pleased that I did.My first impression was that it's surprisingly compact (comes in a small box, no excess packaging or materials wasted). The finish is glossy and not easily tarnished by smudgy fingerprints, it's also very easy to wipe clean. It is fairly weighty to hold, but it's that reassuring weight of good design, not painful on the wrists at all, and it's perfectly comfortable to hold and use. The power may take some getting used to, especially if you've dealt with a weaker mixer in the past. I was in a rush one evening, whipping up a quick cake, and I cracked a couple of eggs into a pyrex pint-sized jug, to give them a quick beat before pouring into the butter and sugar. Unfortunately I wasn't thinking clearly, and I put the mixer's beaters into the jug and switched it on, as I would have done before with my old Kenwood, and... the results were messy. Egg on the wall, egg on the cupboards, egg all over me, egg seeping into just about every available crevice and niche it could find. I only switched it on to the lowest setting, too. It was a lesson learned, anyway. This mixer requires roomy vessels to work in. The two typical beaters supplied are great for most tasks, but the bonus of the supplied balloon whisk attachment is very nice for egg whites and whipping cream. I can't comment on the efficiency of the dough hooks because I haven't used them as yet. There are several power settings, and an easily accessible 'turbo' button just under your thumb, which really just acts as a final highest power option for when you want a blitz of real va-voom. The mixer is also suprisingly quiet to use - noticeably whirry, of course, but it's a soft kind of deep sound, not a high-pitched shrieking that some mixers produce. All in all, I'm very happy. I've churned out some very nice yorkshire puds, cakes, meringues, pancakes, mousses, and even fluffy creamed spuds with my mixer. It does the job well, it's attractively crafted and as a bonus there's a supplied recipe book full of ideas from the man himself. Well worth the money.

Disappointed,

This arrived and looked good, however I wish I'd paid more attention to some of the reviews reference the power. The lowest power setting is far too powerful and results in cream/ eggs etc all over the kitchen. This is not a mixer that I would recommend.
