Nice quick intro to Joyce and his writings 9 July 2011
By William D. Freeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I have read this little book three times: once before starting in on Joyce's writings, once while in the midst of reading them and once upon completion. It certainly helped make sense of things without having to wade through a "doorstop" biography first, a task that should not be undertaken until after reading Joyce's four primary books.

The text of this book is offprint from the British--yes British--Dictionary of National Biography. This is why the book is so brief. Legally speaking, Joyce lived and died a British subject and never once visited Ireland during the second half of his life. He even refused an Irish passport when Ireland did finally become independent. The author, however, Bruce Stewart, is an Irish scholar and knows his Joyce.
