Review

"The genius of Ellmann's James Joyce is its abundance of detail--its wealth of anecdotes and letters, recovered conversations, and poems. It's a pleasure to salute this masterly book as it marches past again."--Newsweek

5.0 out of 5 stars The kind of book that can change your life 12 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I doubt that there has ever been a better biography of a writer than this one. Joyce's life
positively saturates his writing and Richard Ellman triumphantly brings this out. I enjoyed
reading this (several times) as much as many well-known novels. I would compare it to Boswell,
rather than the usual academic biography. The reason I'm writing this review is that I noted
that there is a new Joyce biography, to which my instant response was: "What's the point, since
we already have Ellmann?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Review 11 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is how biographies used to be written:dense, erudite, full of asides and notes on notes on notes.

Can be dull but worth the effort and it is an effort.

Nevertheless all you could ever want to know about JJ and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive literary biography 27 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
I have loved this book for years. It's the definitive literary biography of Joyce, although this means that some character faults are seriously under-played - his drunkenness and his cruelty to Nora and children
