Book Description

21 Dec 2000 Stewart Dynasty in Scotland (Book 2)
Whether as lawgiver, tyrant or matyr, James I has cast a long shadow over the history of Scotland. Conditioned by a childhood surrounded by the rivalries of the Stewart family, and by 18 years of enforced exile in England, he was to prove a king very different from his elderly and conservative forerunners. The author concludes that, despite the apparent power and glamour, James I's "golden age" had shallow roots: after a life of drastically swinging fortunes, James I was to meet his end in a violent coup, a victim of his own methods.

This may well be an impressive academic monograph on James I and his reign but it is not a book for anyone looking for a dramatic telling of what should be a thrilling tale of violence and revenge. The narrative is unremitting but sadly not very compelling. Dry and dreary and very disappointing - I found it largely unreadable. Other reviewers may disagee but I feel the general reader rather than the scholar should steer clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, you'll never regret it. 23 Feb 2010
Absolutely fanastic. If you've never read a biography of a medieval Scottish king then try starting here. The subject matter helps, of course; personal tragedy, internecine strife, and appalling political struggles. Brown's writing is so subtle that it is sometimes possible to forget that one is reading a solid academic work. Get your reading glasses out, sit down with a strong cup of coffee and indulge...
