Product Description

A cosy (amateur sleuth) crime novel:
SweetMysteryBooks.com: I read this one straight through and enjoyed it like a meal at Harringtons.
CozyMysteryBookReview.com: Light and interesting read. I enjoyed Winter and Spring and looking forward to the Summer and Fall mysteries yet to come.

Meet Lord James Harrington and his delightful wife, Beth; residents of the tiny village of Cavendish, deep in the heart of West Sussex in England. They adore hosting seasonal events, running their country hotel, keeping the local folklore alive and listening to the latest murder mystery on the wireless. But mysteries don’t always remain on the airwaves.........

It’s 1958 and James and Beth are hosting the annual spring fair where wealthy recluse, Delphine Brooks-Hunter, is murdered. James is summoned to the reading of her will and is tasked with solving an intriguing riddle. Meanwhile, Beth tackles her own mystery after discovering a homeless man suffering with amnesia.

As they delve deeper, a number of questions emerge. What links Delphine to the fairground folk? Who would harm such a refined lady? Are rumours of World War espionage true? Is the homeless man everything he purports to be? Will James solve the mystery set before him? Will Beth discover the identity of the homeless man?

They go about unravelling the truth but uncover far more than they ever bargained for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 15 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I read the Winter Mystery when it came out last year and have been waiting for this second book to be released and it doesn't disappoint at all. The familiar characters were there along with a few new ones and the plot and story kept me entertained and wanting to read on. It's a typical cosy mystery which I love and set in an era that I love. I wait,in anticipation, for what I presume will be the Summer Mystery??

At only 99p I thought I would try out this book. I was so horrified by the appalling prose, I put it down unfinished, only to return to it some months later hoping I had imagined it. I hadn't. The characters are poorly drawn and speak in pseudo 50s slang, there is far too much description of not a lot...It was a waste of time and money, even just 99p.

Here is an example of the wretched grammar to which you are subjected: "It didn't sit well with him and often bemoaned the trivial nature of illnesses he attends from the female residents". A lack of pronoun AND a change of tense within a SENTENCE?!

Don't waste your money! Until this author gets a publisher who employs a proof reader, it's much more pain than gain!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable cosy mystery 20 Nov 2014

I read the first Lord James Harrington book and loved it, so I downloaded this one straight away, the second in the series. It is a traditional cosy mystery, set in a village and with the same central characters as the first. Already, I feel fond of them and involved in their lives.
Lord James is no snob. His circle of close friends includes a world-weary policeman, a gentle young vicar and a somewhat dubious East Ender with some shady connections. His ancestral home is now a hotel and he lives nearby in humbler but more practical surroundings with his American born wife, Beth, their twin sons being students at Oxford. He loves to keep village traditions alive and to look after the villagers as his ancestors have done. In fact, he's an all-round nice guy. He developed a taste for amateur sleuthing when he found a local farmer dead in suspicious circumstances and, though the investigation brought serious danger to his family, he becomes involved in another mystery when an elderly lady is found murdered in Lord James' own grounds. At the same time, a handsome young stranger with amnesia is found in his stables. What is the connection between the two? Well, I soon guessed that, but the twists and turns of the plot meant that I did not guess whodunnit.
If you are looking for realism or great literature, you won't find it here! But you will find a beautifully imagined village with intriguing inhabitants, a vivid description of some locations in London, quite a nice period atmosphere and an enjoyable story to escape into. As others have pointed out, the test needs good editing and there are a number of incomplete sentences and grammatical errors, as well as a couple of spelling mistakes. However, these are minor and there is actually something to enjoy in Lynn Florkiewicz's writing style.

The author gives a lovely comfortable view of village life in the 50s. A real feel-good story with the sort of enjoyment you get from reading Agatha Christie. Looking forward to the rest of the series
