Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The most technically advanced motion picture ever made has also inspired a video game that's set to make its own waves, as the world of Pandora becomes interactive. Just like the film you must choose whether to side with the human military or the native Na'vi, as both fight for control of the planet.

The ultimate battle between nature and technology
Human weapons and vehicles have awesome firepower
For every human vehicle there's a monster to match it
New vehicles have been designed by the movie makers

Just like the film the game can be played in stereoscopic 3D, but whether you don the goggles or not the intense third person action stands on its own. The game's huge levels leave plenty of space for the two sides to face off, with the technologically advanced humans surprisingly even matched against the super strong Na'vi.

You need brawn as well as brain to win though, with unlockable abilities that can change the course of battle and a strategic overview map to keep control of. With the whole game closely overseen by James Cameron this is one of the most authentic movie tie-ins ever made.

Key Features
  • Untold story: Explore the world of Pandora in an exclusive prequel story set before the movie, but created with the help of the film creators - including James Cameron.
  • Cinematic visuals: Incredible graphics replicate the look and feel of the film, from the deadly wildlife to the giant floating islands.
  • Evolve or die: Unlock new skills and abilities by accumulating "effort points", from air strikes and invisibility for the humans to deadly animal mounts as the Na'vi.
  • Risky business: Strategic overview map lets you plot the overall course of the war - although the biggest decision is which army you choose to side with.
  • The third way: Just like the film you can experience the whole of the Avatar game in full 3D, if you have a console with HDMI output and a 120Hz TV.
About the Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Ubisoft's huge development studio in Canada has created many of the French publisher's biggest hits, including the Splinter Cell series, the modern Prince of Persia games, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin's Creed, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, the Far Cry sequels and James Cameron's Avatar.

Product Description

James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is the official videogame based on the highly anticipated film James Cameron's Avatar. The videogame will take you deep into the heart of Pandora, an alien planet that is beyond imagination. Gamers will encounter the Na'vi, Pandora's indigenous people and discover other life forms the likes of which have never been seen in the world of videogames before. When conflict erupts between the RDA Corporation, a space-faring consortium in search of valuable resources, and the Na'vi, gamers will find themselves thrust into a fight for the heart of a planet and the fate of a civilisation.

  • Immerse yourself in James Cameron's world. Peer deep into the heart of Pandora and see James Cameron's universe, from your own perspective.
  • Engage in a massive conflict between two worlds. Fight for you cause: RDA or Na'vi. Customise more than 60 RDA and Na'vi weapons, combined. Choose your skills: 20 for each clan. Drive all of the vehicles and ride the animals.
  • Expand the battleground in online multiplayer.
  • Develop your character and acquire new skills. Create your very own character and acquire skills as you progress through the game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance, 14 Dec 2009

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
At first glance this appears to be an above average movie tie-in, with lush graphics and top notch presentation, however extended play reveals unresponsive controls, poor camera issues and an unengaging storyline.

The world of Avatar is incredible, with detailed flora & fauna making you believe you are fully immersed in the Avatar jungle. (apparently this game also boasts 3D graphics but you would need to have the type of TV capable of showing these). The jungle can be over detailed at times as it causes some frame rate issues at times.
You have the choice at the beginning of playing as either the marine (ie a standard shoot em up game) or the blue inhabitants, the Navi's (ie a standard platformer).
I found my attention waning the more I played and although there were momnets that lifted it slightly (like when you drive the vehicles) I found the controls too unresponsive to truly enjoy the game.

All in all, there IS fun to be had here, and if you could snap this up cheaply I would say go for it, but in the plethora of top games released at Christmas there are better titles out there more deserving of your cash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to reviews., 21 Dec 2009

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I loved this game. Still playing it for the trophies, and just because i have fallen in love with pandora itself. The camera work is absolutely fine. But people pick it to bits because they want to break the physics within the game to do things that are plain crazy. When your in the game just look around you. And you realize that this is something amazing. The Na'vi battle system is straight forward and easy and fun. The same goes for the RDA human gameplay. The story was for me very engaging and i wanted to beat the RDA to bits when i was a Na'vi and the same goes for the opposite play through. This is the best movie game adaption since spiderman 2 all those years ago. The online leaves something to be desired but for this was all about the story mode. Alot of time has gone into this game and it shows in the graphics, over all presentation and gameplay. Take this game for what it is and not what it could be and you'll be pleasently surprised. Bring on the sequel with some improvements and this could be a very good franchise. James Cameron himself stated that this avatar game project would be a learning process and i believe he'll deliver as time goes by.

4.0 out of 5 stars The start of something special, 23 Dec 2009
By Samuel English "Keiraak" (UK) - See all my reviews

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
After watching the movie, I bought the game, partly because the world Jame's Cameron has invented is perfect for a game and partly because I wanted to make a statement that i wanted more.

It does not matter to me that the game occasionally appears unpolished, but what did irritate me is that the story (particuarly the Na'vi one does not seem to respect the ideals set in place by the Movie)

As an example one of the key alien and emotionally brilliant aspects of the film is the idea of (the bond) where the Na'vi can effectively plug themselves into animals... this was tragically absent.

Another issue I became increasingly annoyed by was the fact that at various intervals the Na'vi character rides several of the animals which were absolutely sacred to the race. at several points completely contradicting spoken dialogue in the film.

However this is immaterial when you consider the positive aspects of the game:

Avatar provides you with 2 unique gameplay experiences as both the RDA (where it is comparable to lost planet colonies) and the Na'vi (where the game becomes more of a hack and slash where your sucess is dependant on speed and effective use of the special abilities).

It is to my eternal annoyance that i could not witness pandora in full 3d, a world so lovingly created it practically leaps out at you even from the confines of my sadly 3d incapable tv.

The game features a unique multiplayer in several modes where you play as two races with completely different attributes and skills in a hot pvp environment.

The game features a fun leveling system and it is rewarding to see your character develop as you progress through the game.

However Avatar is hardly perfect and could be successful to the level of a major franchise such as Gears of War 2 if people invest in this story and give the design team a chance to really enhance the gameplay and storyline
