Product Description

Product Description

In November 1980, legendary film critic and historian Richard Schickel and a documentary crew went to London to interview Academy Award-winning actor James Cagney on the set of Ragtime. It was a rare opportunity to talk with the reclusive star of such classic movies as Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and White Heat. Here’s Cagney’s surprising story.

Did not think this did justice to a great actor Felt I still did not know anything new about this man as a person or as a performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Yankee Doodle Dandy - himself 30 Sep 2013

James Cagney was a truly great actor and a life long favourite of mine. I know that, for the most part his films predated my likelihood of attending the cinemas, none the less he epitomised the image of my own father as a short but tough man that could look after himself no matter what. His life story is worth the telling and the knowing. Highly respected within the industry he chose to work in. I smile every time I know he is going to be on television and when I take out one of his DVD's to watch. The classic 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' was based on the live of George M Cohen the man described as the man who owns Broadway. Like so many of the great stars James Cagney was a great dancer and never more so than when he was in that film.

5.0 out of 5 stars unusual approach (not a biography) . 5 Aug 2012

An interesting read about one of the very best actors in the movies, but it's not a biography, more an analysis of his personality. There is an interesting interview with James Cagney whilst on the set of Ragtime, his last movie.
