5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Funny! 20 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
With James Blond (Stockport is Not Enough) Terry Ravenscroft has penned another comedy winner. A clever and well written parody on Fleming's James Bond series, the parallels are nicely drawn whilst the story works equally well as a stand-alone piece. The humour is plentiful and down-to-earth without being overtly crude. Ravenscroft's prose, in this book as well as his others, is easy on the eye and sweeps the reader along at a pleasant and satisfying pace. There's never a dull moment but the action is never frenetic. This is a rewarding piece of light reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars My name is Blonde. 18 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I really like spoof books and I have soft spot for James Bond films (especially the old Sean Connery and Roger Moore ones which were a bit more tongue in cheek), so I was really looking forward to reading this book, and it didn't disappoint.

It is a ludicrous and funny caper, with some great one-liners (I did find myself laughing out loud), and I really liked the way it related to the 007's movies and novels, it's a good send-up. The book was an easy read with a steady pace that kept me enthralled to the end.

I agree with some of the reviewers that Terry Ravenscroft's references to Stockport were thin and that the book could have been set anywhere. I suppose occasionally you do come across a spoof book where the location is essential to the plot, like in Tony Royden's excellent comedy thriller The Dealer, but on this occasion I didn't think the location was that important and I certainly didn't let it spoil my enjoyment of the book.

It's a fun read and a wonderful parody of a national treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dry humour at it's best!! 22 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This was my first venture into the Kindle store,so i was unsure of where to start for my first title.I thought a light hearted comedy would fit the bill,so i read the reviews on "James Blond-Stockport is too much",and decided this sounded a good read.I was not disappointed ,the book was a delight, and with me coming from Stockport,i found the places where the book was set, were in actual fact real.I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good laugh, well done Terry Ravenscroft,i will add you to my favorite authors list!

3.0 out of 5 stars James Blond 23 Feb 2013
By Joo (in UK) TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a parody / spoof of James Bond, whereby James Blond is actually a secret agent and styles himself a bit on Bond, to varying effect.

Because of bad guys taking over Stockport and buying up buildings, it put me in mind of Robert Rankins Brentford Trilogy books.

It was an enjoyable read, lighthearted and funny. Not quite Rankin (when he's at his best) but then no one is quite like Rankin.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I'd hoped 19 Sep 2011
By Sophie
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoy a good laugh and was very hopeful of this book. However I found the humour a bit too obvious and contrived with the references to James Bond and the films feeling shoe-horned in. Terry Ravenscroft is a good writer but this seems a bit 'By the numbers'. Take the micky out of a successful film franchise, set it in a real northern town and throw in some VERY contrived names. Austin Powers did this far better! I've just recently read The Money That Never Was which is in a similar vein but much warmer and way funnier.

I'll try him again though, as it did make me laugh and that's always good!

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to enjoy this, but... 14 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As someone born in Stockport, and having spent a great deal of my life there, this was a book I wanted to enjoy. I remember coming across some of Terry's work years ago and found it very funny, and with having a locals knowledge of his location, 'Stockport is too much' should have been great. Unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations, having the feel of something written by the author just in their lunch break. The locations seemed poor, and sparse. To someone who doesnt know Stockport, this book wont enlighten you any further. I know its supposed to be humour and in no way a travel guide. The story itself could have taken place anywhere, and is a weak story at best. There is no empathy for any of the characters, the names seem stupid even to a fan of Bond and the Carry On series. It just screams 'weak' all the way through.

For those who want a far fetched novel set in a familiar setting, take a look at Aberystwyth Mon Amour A book where someone has included a town in much the same way as Terry, but with much better effect.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stockport really is too much 7 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm afraid I didnt read all of this book, as after the first few chapters I had had enough. I know it was meant to be tongue in cheek (atleast I hope it was) but it definately wasnt what I wanted to read.
