Product Description

With a superb ensemble cast, this is a hilarious and heart-warming BBC comedy from Jennifer Saunders, the writer and star of Absolutely Fabulous.

Clatterford is a small town, but big enough to have a good cross-section of people, local shops and a late night convenience store - a place which also has a thriving Women's Guild. When Sal's husband dies suddenly of a heart attack, she is forced to give up her role as practice nurse at the local surgery. Without a job and feeling very much alone, Sal slowly realises that she needs the support of the Women's Guild as much as they need her, so she decides to join them and give the Guild a try... after all, its ideals are to promote truth, justice, tolerance and fellowship - or is it just an excuse for a good old gossip?

Starring: Sue Johnston, Pauline McLynn, Dawn French, Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders.

Synopsis

Jam and Jerusalem is the hilarious yet poignant new comedy series from the creator of Absolutely Fabulous. Set in the small town of Clatterford, Jam and Jerusalem focuses on the Women's Guild; an organization that was established to promote qualities such as truth, tolerance and justice but its members are far happier gossiping, as recently widowed Sal is about to find out when she joins the group...

best show ive seen in a long time and really does show how much of an excellent comic writer Jennifer Saunders is. Although she hasnt really got a big part in it(unfortunately) the rest of the wide cast are amazing - especially Dawn French as crazy Rosie! this is just a fab series with hilarious and heartfelt storylines and id recommend it to any1!!!

How many times have I watched these two dvd's? Perhaps twenty plus times for each one and I never ,ever get tired of them! Like that other quintessentially english comedy,Fawlty Towers,Jam And Jerusalem improves with age.

Set in a small farming village, and revolving mainly around the local branch of the W.I.,this is a bittersweet confection which never fails to delight!

Check out Sue Johnstone as Sal,the widow who dares to join the W.I. She is superb,as indeed all the rest are! ,in particular the leader of the group, who is beyond compare!

You'll also see smaller parts from the likes of Dawn French as a cheese factory worker,Jennifer Saunders as a rather posh yet slightly eccentric local who trains and judges horse-jumping shows and if her tales are to be believed, houses various rock stars in her spare time in between organising festivals, etc.

joanna Lumley is also superb as an old hag who is completely off her trolley, and the local vicar who is always uptight is a sheer joy!

Before I finish,I have to mention Tash,Sal's daughter, who is hilariously over-the-top as her hippyish daughter, refusing to grow up and accept rsponsibility! You can really feel the bond between Tash and her mum, amidst the agony and ecstasy of sharing the same house!

I could go on and on about all the characters,as all are ace,but I have gone on too long already!

Treat yourself to this 2 dvd-set,kick off your shoes and sink into a lovely, soft armchair with a mug of hot chocolate, and forget about the daily grind!

Just fantastic!!

Can't wait for series two!

Absolutely brilliant. Charming, funny - at times hilarious, sometimes poignant - all without canned laughter. Oh I wish there were more programmes like this. For once, we managed to get the DVD in Australia before the UK and I am glad we did.
A must buy.

While critics have been extremely hard on this show I believe it is easily one of the best things to hit our TV screens in decades! It is a step away from Saunders more outright wackey comedy but equally brillant! The cast is nothing short of amazing with much of Britians best talent on the credits - and they play such a wonderful selection of characters. The entire programme is enhanced by wonderful backing music provided by Kate Rusby, and set in the beautiful English courtry side. It captures rural village life wonderfully and deserves much more recognition than it has been given to date!!

When this show first viewed on the BBC i was actually very disappointed. i think my expectations were unreasonably sky high. I rate Saunders as a writer and the cast is filled to capacity with vastly talented actresses.
However, i bought this dvd and have watched it all the way through, and because my expectations were low from memory of it showing on tv that i was more than pleasantly surprised, hence the 5 stars.
I think the show consists of so many great characters all played sublimely by the cast, that on 1st viewing of the series it presented as being muddled as you are not just focused on 1 or 2 stronger lead characters. On 2nd viewing i can now firmly see that this is a strong comedy, wonderfully executed!
Enjoy! (Don't judge this series too early!!)

I didn't see this when it was on TV, nor did I know anything about it. I bought it solely based on it being written by Jennifer Saunders. The show's cast is an extra bonus reason to get it.

Most of the humour is subtle compared to the in your face humour of most sitcoms. The characters are written brilliantly and the acting makes them truly come alive.

While the first episode is a bit slow, it's there mostly to get you to know the characters and the situation. It did it's job superbly. It draws you in and makes you feel for the problems the various characters have and makes you happy when the problems are sorted out.

This is an instant classic Britcom. I may have to buy another copy because we are going to wear this one out because we keep watching it.

Like other reviewers, I can't wait for series 2 on dvd and hope they continue making more series' of this outstanding show.

This show is in my top 3 favorite sitcoms.

PS: The show is called "Clatterford" in the US and other markets.

This is a wonderful work with a slowly delivered wallop of warmth and affection. I wonder if any of Jennifer Saunder's neighbours in Devon have taken umbrage at what they imagine to be character traits based upon their own. For anyone familiar with village life in England, especially but not exclusively in Devon, this is a delightful treasure chest, brimming with knowing chuckles.

Not many people got ths show or understood it. Because of the French and Saunders tag many were expecting another Ab Fab. Instead J&J is more of a light hearted female version of Last Of The Summer Wine.

A nice little show with a super female cast.
