Product Description

DescriptionDire Straits are one of the great success stories of the last two decades. Their album Brothers In Arms sold over twenty-six million copies, and classic tracks such as Sultans Of Swing, Money For Nothing and Private Investigations showcase the trademark laid back vocal style and wide range of guitar styles embraced by Mark Knopfler. This guitar workshop is a powerful learning tool that will help you extend your stockpile of licks and fills whilst you develop your improvisational skills. The combination of musical notation and guitar tablature in this book together with backing tracks on the CD gives you the opportunity to learn eight of Dire Straits' tracks note for note and then jam with a professional session band. The track listing reflects some of Dire Straits' most popular recordings, providing something for guitarists to have fun with and improvise with, as well as something to aspire to. The audio content is split across two CDs and separated into two sections; section 1 is the backing tracks minus lead guitar and vocals, while section 2 is the backing tracks with all guitar parts added, so in addition to the written tab you can hear the rhythm, fills and solos as they should be played! The Jam With series allows you to accurately recreate the original songs, or to use the transcriptions in the book in conjunction with the backing tracks as a basis for your own improvisation.SonglistBrothers In ArmsMoney For NothingPrivate InvestigationsRomeo And JulietSultans Of SwingTelegraph RoadTunnel Of LoveWalk Of Life

The only problem with all these knopfler books and dvds is that they don't show you knopflers claw hammer and finger picking techniques and it's for this reason I wouldn't be waiting my hard earned cash on these books. The tab is okay in parts, not written as Mark actually plays it. It's been written from a flat pickers point if view not a finger claw hammer point of view. The backing tracks are good. If you don't have his tab books it might be worth the whole purchasing this book but don't expect to be sounding like knopfler. For that you will have to watch hours of videos on YouTube of him playing the sounds. If you purchase this also think about purchasing video surgeon for your computer. With that you will be able to download from YouTube knopfler playing. Then zoom in real close and see what his doing. You can then loop and slow the video footage right down. This is by far the best learning software you will ever buy. Once you are up and running you can use the tab as a guide and just loop small sections of the song over and over and over until you have nailed. I spend over 20 hours solid over tow days nailing romeo and Juliet and it sounds just as the original. It thanks time and hard work to be able to plays these songs without having to think about what your hands are doing but it's worth it.

Yes I know Mark uses schecter guitars now but if you own a Strat then it's rude not to get this book to learn Sultans of Swing.

A great help to play Dire Straits successes 15 Sept. 2012

Very faithful to the original recording of Dire Straits. Professional material, both the book and CDs, indicated to intermediate and advanced guitarists (not beginners). You can really jam with Dire Straits.
Good book, but not for beginners. 21 Feb. 2015

This book is fine if you want to learn note for note. The song selection is good and the backing tracks are pretty good (the exception is the weird sounding accordion thing on Walk of Life). The book is lacking any information about tone settings for the songs. This is a particularly important piece of Knoffler's sound and some settings would be helpful. Given Knoffler's sophisticated playing style, this is not a book for beginners. You need to be comfortable with finger-picking before tackling this one or you may find yourself easily frustrated. Of course, you could use a pick, but then you are basically missing the essential aspect of the sound.

Really more like 3.5 stars 31 Oct. 2013
By Twang - Published on Amazon.com

here's my main complaint.
I don't read music very well at all.
I read tablature pretty ok.
The CDs are with lead or without.
but there are riffs that are hard to read in music or tab.
and you have a heck of a time-- as much hassle as lifting the tonearm of your record player to find just the right spot
you want to hear--figuring out how to play the part just from tab.
It requires that you really know the tune, the guitar part, thoroughly in your mind.
some people are that fantatical, or dedicated, but most of us just want some insight into Knopflers style.
We want to choose a tune, now and then, and have a fairly easy time of the method for learning.
Not have to listen to each note played, memorizing, or having to keep dinking with the cd player controls to find
what you need clarified.

It seems very accurate. Everything I've gone through part of-- because going through all of any one tune is not much fun--has been spot on.

It's not user friendly. Accurate, even complete, yes. I plan to do one tune per week.
That's kinda slow, I think. But concentrating on hearing the music by the Straits, then working on it bit by bit, should pan out
very well.
I like the effort on the practice side, not the tone arm lifting side.
