What a great book!
So thin that if he turned sideways he'd disappear, Jake Jellicoe's family doesn't have enough money to feed him - or themselves. There's nothing for any of them to eat, and Jake has to sleep on a shelf in the pantry as his house is so small. So when his mum gets pregnant again, and thinks the only option is to sell the new baby to raise some money, Jake knows he has to take action. Signing up as cabin boy aboard the `Flounder', Captain Dreadnought promises him a share of any loot they find. But Jake discovers that the captain isn't all that he seems and soon Jake is caught up in an exciting race for the lost treasure of Dread Pirate Redbeard.
Aimed at readers aged 7+ in the early stages of Key Stage Two, Jake Jellico is a humorous and appealing story. With jokes, twists and turns aplenty, you really root for Jake as he thwarts the evil pirates - he's a clever and resourceful boy, as well as laugh-out-loud funny. Ideal for those recently fluent at reading, there is enough here to challenge children and make them think, but more importantly, keep them entertained, as several nail-biting cliff-hangers at the end of the chapters ensure it's very difficult to put down. Scattered throughout with appealing illustrations from David Roberts, this book will be especially good for encouraging reluctant boy readers.
