Review

"If Lisbeth Sallander took a a lesson in female empancipation from Tura Satana, she would maybe have ended up something like Jezebel, the flint-assed, funny and endearingly fallible lead in Danny Hogan's fable for our times" --Cathi Unsworth author of The Not Knowing, The Singer and Bad Penny Blues

"Good characters, nice sense of place. A lively, fun, pulpy romp"
--Alan Guthrie author of Bye Bye Baby, Killing Mum, Slammer and Two-Way Split

Product Description

The third novella from Danny Hogan is soon to hit the stands. Set fifty years into an uncertain future, an unnamed apocalypse has sent civilization two hundred years into the past. The once proud state of Texas has been literally returned to its wild west origins.
Enter a gunfighter, Jezebel Misery St. Etienne, young and vicious. Although she will do anything to escape an honest day's labour she is righteous of heart and strong of spirit. From her home in Austin she is called upon to escort a girl called Alice across the badlands of East Texas, filled with savage mutants and evil outlaws, to Houston. Little does she know that Alice is seeking vengeance against the posse that decimated her family, and that by the end, it will be Jezebel herself who will be seeking that vengeance. Her and her old .44.

Rollicking good read 14 April 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When was the last time you read a book that was so fun that you just couldn't stop reading? Well as they say on their website, Pulp Press are "dedicated to providing entertainment and escapism in the form of dime novels, penny dreadfuls and spicy stories that will be accessible to everybody." As a Pulp Press title, Danny Hogan's Jailbait Justice does not disappoint.

Set in a future where an apocalypse has returned Texas to its Old West roots, Jailbait Justice tells the story of gunfighter Jezebel Misery St. Etienne, who mooches around Austin drinking whiskey and killing the unrighteous. She takes a commission to escort a young woman named Alice to Houston where Alice intends to claim the three thousand gold bits left by her father with a local businessman. Of course, this is a pulp novel, so expect prison breaks, shoot outs and even zombies...

Part road trip, part Western, part horror and part thriller, Jailbait Justice starts out at a cracking pace and doesn't let up. Jezebel is a hard-talking, fast-shooting anti-hero, the whiskey-swigging lovechild of Snake Plisskin and Ripley. Danny Hogan piles misfortune on her, leaving you wondering how she's going to get herself out of one bad situation after another. Alice proves a good foil for her, and the mutual respect they end up discovering is a thing of beauty.

Jailbait Justice is incredibly violent AND incredibly fun, and I zipped through it, always wanting to know what happened next. It's a terrific read, and I hereby award it five out of five!

The Apocalypse isn't just a bunch of old rocks in Greece, you know? It's The End Of Days. The Second Dark Age. Scary, eh? And it's going to be great! Well, if Danny Hogan's brilliant Jailbait Justice is in any way prophetic it will be.

Jailbait Justice is the story of Jezebel Misery St Etienne, who made her first blood soaked appearance in Pulp Metal Magazine. Jezebel is a tough and funny sharpshooter with a dirty mouth. Like Mad Max and Tank Girl's inglorious bastard off-spring, she rights wrongs across a post apocalypse landscape with the aid of a massive gun called Comeuppance

In Jailbait Justice Jezebel is lumbered with taking a mouse of a girl called Alice across the badlands to the bright lights and apparent sanctuary of Houston. This sparky relationship has echoes of the films Three Mules For Sister Sarah and The African Queen and it gives the story an extra bullet in its barrel. Along the way the quarrelsome pair encounter bloodthirsty bandits, freaks, cannibals and all manner of danger.

Danny Hogan's previous novellas for Brit Grit publishers Pulp Press were both cracking reads but with Jailbait Justice he has excelled himself. Horror, sci-fi and spaghetti western all violently collide in a story that is visceral, scary, funny, exciting and so clearly crying out for a sequel. Or two. Jailbait Justice is the sort of book that you throw a sicky to finish!

Six shots right on target!

There is no way of adequately describing Dany Hogan's Jailbait Justice in a review like this - you simply have to buy it and try it ... you won't be disappointed, if you are, you clearly need to be lobotomized and put out to grass on a desert island. There is no chance a mainstream publisher would risk its neck on this; it's too genre-twisting, would confuse the life out of the marketing department! This is a big positive: like it says on the tin - "fiction like it used to be". Bold. Expansive. Experimental.
