Product Description

Claudia "borrows" 3000 sesterces from Sabbio Tullus, and leaves town for the spa resort of Atlantis. There she meets Cal, but after a little flirting she finds Cal is dead, and realises from the gossip that Atlantis is far more dangerous than the disease-ridden streets she has left behind. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Yet another triumph for our heroine Claudia, surely the most interesting lady of Rome of her time. The descriptions of place and time, with a contemporary slant in terms of language make this series so enjoyable

The brash heroine Claudia Seferius has to escape Rome for yet another shady dealing, and ends up in the resort town of Atlantis were a convenient tie-in with many other characters and crimes occurs. There is more of the Claudia/Marcus story as well.

This is the third book in the series that I have read (although this is the fifth in the series), and although they are very readable and the mysteries are alright, they are lacking something. The settings are just not quite authentic enough, and the way that all the characters and stories comes together is a little contrived. I think that the worst thing about these books, though, is the names and the covers. It really does look as if you are reading something seedy, although they are just light-hearted on the inside and consequently not as bad as they look. If you don't mind this, and are looking for a superficial romp, then this will do the job nicely.

Agian, Claudia is in a "small town" (for lack of a better description)and surrounded by a cast of confusing characters that you never really get to know. The characters use phrases and terms that do not seem to "fit" in the Ancient Roman theme, this is distracting. The romantic tension between the two main characters seems forced - when have they even spent a sufficent amount of time together to feel this way (this is taking into account the previous books).

The saving grace of this series is that Claudia is not a "goody two-shoes" and that leaves lots of room for the unexpected to occur.
