More About the Author

From the first moment I first paddled down the lane on a repaired abandoned Vespa in '68, I was hooked on the internal combustion engine. Next came an NSU Quickly with scored chrome plated cylinder and then a Triumph Tiger Cub Sports, bought for £7.00 pounds as a combined Christmas and birthday present. Pushing that non-runner seven miles home was a labour of pure love and as a fourteen year old I couldn't have been prouder. Many lessons were learned with that fine little bike, on which I eventually passed my test and reached the dizzy speeds of some 75 mph (after following the tuning advice issued by Triumph themselves). That was the start of a lifelong enjoyment of Coventry-made vehicles, working through the whole Triumph range and nowadays encompassing Jaguars too.

Along the way, countless other British bikes have been used, abused, rebuilt and raced and those skills have transferred nicely over to Jaguars, from multiple E-types, two D-type replicas (with a third on the way) and all shades of XJ and XJ-S from early to late. My business is pharmaceutical and medical writing, so extending my hobby interest into writing about bikes and cars for magazines, and now Veloce Books, has been a real pleasure. If any of my writing brings a smile to your face or helps you enjoy the classic vehicle hobby, then I'll regard the work as having been well worthwhile. Have fun!

Review

Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car, February 2007"This is not a book for the squeamish. No, not with it's photos of rotted-out bulkheads, rusted-through frames and collapsed engine mounts ... This book is an excellent starting point for anyone contemplating ownership of an E-Type, and cheap enough insurance to keep the unwary away from the worst pitfalls."Classic Car Weekly (UK), January 2007 "From practical advice and who's who in the Jaguar scene, to making sense of history files and other paperwork, it is an ideal foundation to build on your E-Type knowledge before taking the plunge. Nonetheless, a lot of the information offered could pay dividends when viewing any make of classic car."

Please note that this book covers six cylinder models only, not the V12 models.

A modest book, rather expensive for only 59 pages but achieves what it sets out to do - namely advise on the purchase of an E-Type. Deals with the subject in a simple non technical way & is written in clear English so that even the technically challenged can follow the narrative. Nonetheless it can also be used by the more experianced as a check list of points which may otherwise be missed. I would have liked larger photo's since its sometimes difficult to relate the latter to the photo's caption. However, I imagine cost, precluded this option. I liked the book & would welcome further efforts from Mr Crespin.

I don't rate these guides at all - I've had a couple but wouldn't buy another. Very superficial and give the impression the author doesn't know much about the car.

YOU MIGHT DECIDE NOT TO BUY AN E-TYPE AFTER READING THIS BOOK AS IT DESCRIBES HOW THE E-TYPE HAS MANY AREAS WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO ASSESS BUT VITAL TO GET RIGHT. A LOT OF INFORMATION PACKED INTO A SMALL BOOK
