Book Description

The turn-based tactical role-playing series Jagged Alliance has been sequeled, expanded, modded, optioned, multiplayered, and kickstarted, but the series’ many fans usually point to Jagged Alliance 2 as the high water mark, and one of the finest turn-based video games of all time.

Jagged Alliance 2 brings to the table a wicked sense of humor, simulation-driven character design, a combination of strategic overworld and tactical battles reminiscent of the X-COM series, and a surprisingly deep open-world RPG experience reminiscent of the Ultima or Elder Scrolls games.

Focusing on JA2′s development history and basing his book largely on new personal interviews with the game’s developers, game designer and web technology developer Darius Kazemi will delve deep into the legacy of a game that still has much to teach gamers and game-makers 14 years after its release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, interesting, well researched. A great read! 28 Aug. 2014

A great read! Deep, thoughtful, and not a "gushing fanboy" work, this historical investigation of a true classic is both interesting and informative. The author dives deep into an analysis of the four "layers" of the game: the laptop layer, the strategy layer, the tactics
layer, and the adventure layer. The original programmers and artists were interviewed, and I found it fascinating to hear their take on the development process - their ideas concerning tactics game design, the business and logistical side of things, and why "dumbing down the AI" was the best choice because it added to the fun-factor. Tons of references, opinions with proof, and even a look into the source code (amazing to see the unused AI behaviours and long comments by the devs themselves). Highly recommended - quality writing by an intelligent and informed author who did his homework.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Way Game Books Should be Written 6 Sept. 2014

I knew I was in good hands when the author begin by distancing himself from the sort of personalized, English Lit. style of video game criticism that came into vogue in the late 2000's. By interviewing the creators and discussing the culture and context the game came from, a much better picture of the game's meaning and impact emerges. I was particularly impressed to see Kazemi pay attention to the publishers and money people, who may not have any artistic impact but had valuable insights on the kind of philosophy you need to fund a game like Jagged Alliance 2.

A good read for people who have never touched the game and just want to know how a cult classic was made and something special for the fans.

I have been a fan of JA2 for years and to see this fine book written by a passionate author is so cool to see. Well-written, engaging and full of information that doesn't exist elsewhere. To non-fiction what Mike is to assassinating political leaders.

A lucidly written take on an overlooked game that I couldn't put down. Brisk and to-the-point without being perfunctory, I would recommend JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 (the book) to anyone who is interested in a closer look at the circumstances surrounding the creation of a largely forgotten classic.
