3.0 out of 5 stars IS THIS HERESY? 15 Feb 2009
By Mike L
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When you have the likes of Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Don Alias and Jaco Pastorius on stage together it seems churlish, if not down-right heretical, to start criticising. However, the performance on this DVD simply falls short of what you would expect from these jazz giants. Everyone plays well and there some excellent moments, but these are musicians who, at their best, are incidenciary and that magic is lacking here. It doesn't help that absolutely no atmosphere at all is created by either the lighting or camera-work, and the shots of the audience are down-right scary - a crowd of bearded men who all look like they're related to one another. This DVD is a great historical document but is for die-hard Jaco fans only - and of course there are still millions of us!

3.0 out of 5 stars Posthumous release 29 Dec 2011
Format:DVD
What can you say - this DVD was not produced and released with Jaco Pastorius knowledge and if he had been alive, I'm certain that it would never had been released, but unfortunately Jaco left us way too soon.

This is not to say that we are getting a bad show - not at all - not with all these great musicians, BUT if you really know what Jaco was capable of, it is obvious that this is not up to par - his playing here is far from his phenomenal contribution to for example Weather Report and Joni Mitchell and of course his official solo work.

For everybody who knows the tragic story of the last years of Jaco's life and the depression, which took its toe on his creativity, this could be what is starting to show here... I don't know, maybe just an off day.... But one thing is for sure - this DVD can never overshadow the fact that this man always will be hailed as one of the true geniuses and innovators of the electric bass - a title that very few can claim.

If you are looking for some other and more "happy" DVD releases with Jaco I would suggest Weather Report:
1) Live in Offenbach 1978 [DVD] 2) Live At Montreux 1976 [DVD] [2008]
Or this show, which is a little special, in a more free 'avant-guard' style - a trio performance with Albert Mangelsdorff (the actual band leader) on trombone and Alphonse Mouzon on drums: Jaco Pastorius - Trilogue - Live in Berlin 1976 [DVD]
In all these DVD's his true genius shines and maybe along the way, they will be able to dig up some more great footage like these three examples here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaco in Montreal 1982 18 Nov 2006
By Matt
Format:DVD
This DVD is great, for this one simple reason. Any Jaco fan know's how little video, there is of the great bassist himself! ( other than Modern Electric Bass )so when i saw this, i got it straight away. Not only do i enjoy his great talent to listen to, but to watch aswell. So i would Highly Recommend this to anyone who is a massive Jaco fan, buy it, as you wont be disappointed, even if it does run just under 1 hour it's well worth it.
