New Yorker Adam Green releases his fourth Album Jacket Full of Danger through Rough Trade Records. Recorded towards the end of 2005 in New York's Dumbo Studios with the band who accompanied Green on his recent tours, and the string arranger from Friends Of Mine (Jane Scarpantoni) - all under the watchful eye of long-term producer Dan Myers (Granddaddy, Rival Schools).

It's been an eventful year for Adam Green. He's gained a baby brother (24-years his junior), faced the death of a close friend, endured a Max Carlish-esque documentary-maker-turned-stalker episode and taken a job at Starbucks that he was subsequently fired from. The result of this joy, tragedy and lunacy is his fourth album, Jacket Full Of Danger.
While the baritone croon that Green perfected on last year's Gemstones is still present and correct, he's almost completely abandoned the anti-folk instrumentation with which he made his name. For this new album, Green's band are assisted by a string quartet, a move which ensures a splendid instrumental base to more traditional big bands tracks like Pay The Toll, Animal Dreams, Hollywood Bowl, and the overblown Bond-theme stylings of Hey Dude, the track in possession of the album's weirdest lyric: "Bob Dylan was a vegetable's wife."
It's not just the addition of strings that makes Jacket Full Of Danger Green's most diverse album to date, White Women, which takes its lead from Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, is Green's first attempt at tackling heavy rock, even beginning with the outrageously over-the-top stadium rock line, "You know I wanna bone you!", while Vultures is backed by a graceful bassline straight out of Ben E. King's Motown heyday, and Novotel's tale of the celebrity lifestyle is driven by a precise R&B rhythm. Later, on Nat King Cole, Green's band offer the rockabilly of Buddy Holly, while he performs his best Elvis Presley impersonation. Cast A Shadow, a Beat Happening cover, is a more straight-forward indie-pop gem and is followed by Drugs, the track where Green's arch humour and deep pathos best combine.
Most of the songs don't run for more than two minutes, and the album's fifteen tracks are rattled through in little over half an hour. Perhaps Green, with his vocals more deep and distinct than ever, is worried about outstaying his welcome, but he really ought not to, for few songwriters are able to balance wit, style and invention as intelligently as Adam Green.

Jacket Full of Danger is Adam Green's 4th album already! Only one year after releasing Gemstones, Adam gets back into the studio and this time brings back the string arrangements from Friends of mine while keeping the more upbeat wurlitzer melodies of Gemstones. It works perfectly on all the songs, the strings are lush and dramatic and compliment his even more barritone than ever crooning voice while the band keep the grove tight and light; it blends perfectly and JFoD is that place where Friends of Mine and Gemstones ( both being quite different ) sort of meet each other.
Adam's lyrics are still pretty crazy although maybe slightly less outrageous than the previous albums although nothing too drastic.. It's still full of "classics".
I give 5 stars although I'm a big fan of Mr Green, his music is timeless and one of a kind, seeing him live is great fun and I would recommend it to anyone who isn't too easily offended by crude lyrics; He's definitely one of our favorites at our house, at least I know that I will listen to this cd over and over..
All songs are good although my favorites at the momment would be Novotel, Animal Dreams, Hollywood Bowl and Pay the Toll...
Adam definitely delievered on his 4th album, it is indeed very special and i still don't know wether I find it is his best album or not; definitely as good as his older ones... maybe better; If you're looking for something different from all that post punk revival in the indie scene, if you really catchy tunes you want to whistle or sing along; you won't be disappointed.

I put this album on and hated it. I really really hated it. Then, after about 3 tracks I realised it was one of the best things I've ever heard. Wonderful humour, great arrangements, smooooth vocals and just tremendous appeal. I can't rate it highly enuff. 6*s out of 5. 7...maybe...8!
