Product Description

Autumn 1888 and a disturbing series of events in London s East end lit a fire that threatened to pull apart the fabric of Victorian England and would send shockwaves throughout the civilized world. Take the walk of the East End with leading Ripper expert and broadcaster Richard Jones, to discover a Whitechapel as yet unseen and unknown. Discover the murder sites, visit the places where this unsolved mystery unfolded 120 years ago. This is an intriguingly different documentary film that focuses on the 1888 East End of London & examines the social and political background to the Whitechapel atrocities in the context of an ever changing London. Dramatic reconstructions add to the weight of this compelling narrative. As night sets in and the long shadows fall, we delve into the crooked, cobbled alleyways of Whitechapel to follow the Rippers bloodstained trail of terror. Step by bloodcurdling step you are spirited back to that spine chilling era of swirling fogs and gaslit terror to join police inspector Frederick George Abberline as he and his men hunt the Ripper through the warren of crumbling back streets. Dare you learn the secret of the true identity of Jack the Ripper? Based on Official police files and the findings of the Metropolitan Police Museum who in 1988 opened for the first time the official WHITECHAPEL MURDER FILES. Also endorsed by the two leading and highest ranking officers on the case. Presented by Richard Jones, best selling author and broadcaster from MOST HAUNTED and DISCOVERY CHANNEL and 20th CENTURY FOX s FROM HELL . This is the most authoritative guide yet to the Jack the Ripper story.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and informative addition to a JTR collection., 24 Jan 2001

This review is from: Jack The Ripper [VHS] (DVD)
This video is an easy to watch yet informative addition to any Jack the Ripper collection. It is well presented in an unchallenging way and is much more than just following the famous London walk. The actual "walk" in the video is a tour of all of the crime scenes showing them as they were and as they are now, some with different names to hide the notoriety. I found this particularly informative for anyone new to this subject as it is not so easy to find these renamed sites. Many look totally different to their past incarnations and may be easily overlooked. There is also included a brief review of the murders with additional background information on related events taking place at that time. Information is also supplied on the major players in the affair such as the police officers witnesses and reporters. There is also a run down of the "usual suspects" with references to some of the more recent suggetions as to the identity of the ripper. Whilst most of the information is well known to ripper enthusiasts it is set at an ideal level for the newcomer. Although there is no new evidence introduced it is an enjoyable way for those interested in the Whitechapel murders to spend 60 minutes and emerge more knowledgable if possibly somewhat more confused, than when they switched on. A definite must for the newcomer.
