Product Description

Product Description

The Diary of Jack the Ripper, which came to light in 1991, revealed the identity of the world's most notorious serial killer. At the time it was widely believed to have been a hoax, yet, incredibly, not one person has managed to prove how it was forged or by whom.

This, argues Paul Feldman, is because the diary was genuine.

Discover how the largest and most detailed investigation on the subject ever to be undertaken led the author through the smokescreen of an official cover-up, via the Royals and the Masons, to the true provenance of the Diary, Jack the Ripper's watch and, ultimately, his identity.

From the Back Cover

The autumn of 1888 saw a series of savage murders perpetrated in the Whitechapel area of London. These killings came to be known as the work of Jack the Ripper. When a diary was discovered in 1991, written by a man who claimed to be the notorious murderer, the book was widely dismissed as a hoax. But no one has ever conclusively proved that it was a forgery.

This, argues Paul H Feldman, is because the diary was genuine.

Feldman recounts the largest and most detailed investigation ever to be undertaken on the veracity of Jack the Ripper's diary. Behind the smokescreen of an official cover-up, via royalty and the Masons, the author divulges crucial evidence from Home Office files and uncovers the truth about the origins of the diary and Jack the Ripper's watch.

This is also a story of the diarist who was poisoned and his wife who was wrongly imprisoned for his murder, and of the illegitimate descendants still alive today, who have rejected the potential financial rewards and battled to conceal the truth.

And of course, it reveals the identity of one of the most infamous criminals of all time: Jack the Ripper himself.

Having been an avid Jack the Ripper fan for many years I was given this book as a Christrmas gift. The person who gave me the book was trying to show me that the myth that surrounded Jack the Ripper had in fact heightened the story and that a pausible explanation to his identity was available. Admittedly the myth of foggy streets and mysterious figures in London in the late 1880s did give the story a mystical feel. I started to read the book with a very closed mind but the style of writing and the authors enthusiasm for this subject carried me along. I was intriged to finish the book and the facts and explanations that the author gives for the identity of J T R are hard not to acknowledge. James Maybrick was little known to me before I read this book and yet everything in his life and times and dates can correspondend with that of J T R. I found the book very entertaining and thought provoking. It must be pointed out that this book would not suit those of you out there who want a history of the Ripper Crimes as this book does not go into these crimes in detail it mentions them but gets on to the task at hand of identifying the Ripper. Very enjoyable Read.

I'm astonished at how involved Mr Feldman becomes in this book. In my opinion he's guilty of the cardinal sin of any researcher in that he's crossed that line of objectivity, resulting in some highly speculative conclusions. Mr Feldmans ability to massage the facts to fit the fiction is nothing short of breathtaking. However, the exhaustive research has thrown up some subjects worthy of continued debate despite the spin that Mr Feldman has put on them. I also welcome the renewal of interest in the Florence Maybrick case, and am amused by the irony that Mr Feldman has condemned James Maybrick as JTR upon contradictory scientific evidence and imaginative speculation in the same manner that Mrs Maybrick herself was condemned. A flawed but interesting book. If approached objectively, then it's certainly worth a read.

This book gives conclusive proof beyond a reasonable doubt that The Diary of Jack the Ripper was genuine and James Maybrick was that man. Looking through these reviews it's clear that many of these people (usually anonymous in the review by the way) are 'Ripperologists' with their own agendas. Every year since this book was brought out more Ripper books have been released naming other suspects, Jack the Ripper has turned into an industry with a lot of people making money with it. Someone has even made an entry on the Diary in wikipedia but mentions books released after this one, but doesn't refrence this book although it actually answers and refutes the two objections raised in Wikipedia as to why the Diary is an hoax. Obfuscation and misinformation at its worst, that's why one should never trust an encyclopedia that anyone can make entries in. Wake up and smell the coffee people, the case is solved!
