Amazon.co.uk Review
Jack is Francis Coppola at his most pointless noodling, looking for the film he wants to make instead of just making it. Robin Williams stars as 10-year-old Jack, a boy with an inexplicable disease that ages him at four times the normal human rate. Kept at home like a contemporary Boo Radley, Jack becomes a neighbourhood legend until his parents relent and send him to school. In time, the other kids befriend him and stay loyal as his hyperdevelopment puts a strain on his body and emotions. The idea is sound, but the execution is a bore. The best the script and Coppola can come up with are painfully long scenes in which Williams's character proves himself on the playground and in gross-out contests in a tree house. Coppola fishes around for signs of life and spontaneity in these scenes, but the film is actually best when Jack has to cope with certain feelings in his mature body (such as his attraction to a character played by Fran Drescher) that he isn't prepared for emotionally. Jack would have been a lot better if Coppola had embraced a plan from beginning to end and stuck to it. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable!, 16 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Jack [VHS] [1996] (VHS Tape)
This film is a stroke of genius, it has it all!
Suitable for family viewing, it has an amazing cast and world class acting by the incomparable Robin Williams. You'll laugh till you cry then cry till you laugh at the progress of the 10 year old boy with the appearence of a 40 year old man.
It is a touching and memorable film, but the scene with the tree house initiation is not for the weak hearted (in a funny sort of way)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack, 18 Jul 2005

Our children saw most of the film on television, and really enjoyed it. They asked if we could get the DVD, so we did. It is a very unusual film, but very gentle. It certainly highlights social issues with people who are a bit 'different' to everyone else. Younger children will benefit from having an adult watching it with them as it does seem to raise some interesting questions.

Very interesting and rather thought provoking. Robin Williams acts the part of Jack, very well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful Awful Awful..., 30 Mar 2007
Absolutely awful, overly schmulzy Robin Williams garbage. Aargh !!! Robin Williams CAN act, CAN be very funny, but why, oh why, does he do films like this where he attempts to 'touch our heartstrings' but only ends up insulting the audiences intelligence as it attempts to manipulate their emotions, and boils the bile in your stomach !!! And don't go telling me that this is a great kids film, because most kids will watch anything on TV - its up to you as a parent/sibling/whatever to not stand for tripe like this and show your kids decent, original, funny, genuinely heart warming films !!! And as for Francis Ford Coppola, the director, what can you say ? I'm speachless...
