Book Description

6 Oct 2008
More than 100 years after the last of these brutal acts of violence the mysteries that surrounded the events remain. The number of murders committed by the killer is still unconfirmed and, most poignantly, the identity of the killer is as yet undiscovered. In "Jack the Ripper: The Casebook" the reader is taken on a tour of the underworld of Victorian London, traveling into the backstreets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields where the murders took place. One by one the murder victims are revealed, their similarities discussed and the scenes and circumstances of their murders investigated. The methods of the killer are explored, along with a summary of the evidence, and accounts by witnesses who caught a glimpse of this notorious and immensely elusive figure. A thorough analysis of the likely suspects for the identity of "Jack the Ripper" is undergone, including some figures that have only recently been implicated in the murders.

More About the Author

Richard Jones has written books on subjects such as haunted Britain, the Jack the Ripper murders, Dickensian London, the myths and legends of Britain and Ireland and magic. He is a fully qualified London Blue Badge Tourist Guide, is Member of the prestigious Magic Circle, and was the originator of the acclaimed Jack the Ripper Tour, the London Ghost Walk and Charles Dickens London tours.

He regularly appears on television throughout the world and, from 2003 to 2005, he was the historian on Living TV's hugely popular cult show Most Haunted Live, in which capacity he carried out detailed investigations into subjects as diverse as Dick Turpin, William Shakespeare, The Pendle Witches, Matthew Hopkins, the so-called Witchfinder General and Jack the Ripper. He recently appeared on Channel Five's Jack the Ripper:-The Definitive Story and was the writer and presenter of the acclaimed drama/documentary Unmasking Jack the Ripper.

Richard organises a nightly Jack the Ripper Tour around the East End streets where the infamous murders occurred, and he regularly conducts his London Ghost Walks that explore the darker side of England's Capital. In addition he has recently launched a series of Dickens Walks that explore locations that featured in the life and works of England's greatest novelist.

Richard has explored every corner of Britain and Ireland to visit haunted locations and, although he has never actually seen a ghost, he is almost certain he heard one - or, to be precise, several. His "date with the dead" was at the wonderfully creepy Moore Hall in Ireland, which he visited on a bright August morning whilst he was writing his book Haunted Houses of Britain and Ireland. Whilst exploring its hollow interior he heard childish laughter in several of the rooms but, when he went to investigate, there was nobody there.

Richard Jones has created an instant masterpiece in this fantastic book, in fact, it is more than a book!

The front cover has a magnetic holder which keeps the book closed after reading, you wont close the book much, so it's a waste of time, but a really nice touch, and makes the book stand out on the shelf.

As the story unfolds during "The Autumn of Terror" we are treated to a series of dissertations on subjects from the Victims, to suspects, police officials and press reports. No leaf is left unturned, but the best is yet to come. During the dissertations we are told to look in the attached wallets which include facsimilie copies of ripper letters, letters between officials, newspaper reports, and even a poster with a warning to the occupier!

It was a real pleasure to read, and re-read, and read again, and this will take pride of place on the book case, at least until I read it again!! Well recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitechapel Horror. 9 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have been a 'Jack the Ripper' fanatic all my life and have already about a dozen books on the subject. The book has an atmospheric feel and look about it. It will take pride of place in my collection of JTR books. Any detail you wish to find is readily available. You do not need to plough through pages of text to find any specific item of information. I especially like the collection of replica documents. Holding the replica of the correspondence allegedly written by Jack was enough to send shivers up my back! I'm a sensitive soul! The book is very well produced. I liked the way the magnetic covers closed the book. Full of good photographs and easily read text. At the end you wll be none the wiser as to Jack's true identity, but who cares? An excellent book. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Draw Your Own Conclusion 15 April 2012
I've long been 'slightly' obsessed with the Jack the Ripper history, from its roots in Whitechapel to the more prominent nature of London back then what I usually tend to find an issue with however is the barrage of Ripper books that proclaim to know who they think the would be killer is.

It is a mystery for such a reason, hence why I adore this book.

From the beginning it makes no presumptions and never tries to pinpoint one person, instead allowing us to take the journey and make our own choices on what could have been.

Richard Jones, the creator of the Casebook provides a wonderful insight and lays out the cards one by one.

The first chapters give us a notion of what London was like at the time, at times you feel you are there yourself and that in itself is an accomplishment. However the juice lies in the added extras. As you pore through the pages you come across a host of facsimile documents in regards to the investigation that took place including the infamous From Hell letter.

Although they are just copies it matters none and they all look crisp, clean yet still with a look and feel of the real thing.

Of course after some time the book does go into ideals of whom it might have been and the list of suspects is quite extensive but cleverly it never alludes to a particular person rather it breaks down why each was considered, nothing more.

Overall though it is an enjoyable read that intrigues because of what it offers and lets readers do. WE in essence become the detectives, WE become the ones who see and try to decipher the tangled web of what happened during that bleak time and WE hold the cards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 19 Dec 2009
By Sam C.
I was bought this book last christmas and I loved it, it's great looking with photo's and pull out parts and full of information it's layout made it much more interesting then other books on this subject so much so that a friend wanted to buy one after looking at mine.

Having watched loads of films about Jack the ripper and documentarys I still found this a great read and with the pictures quite creepy too.

This book is the ideal present for so many people and I have recommended it to all my friends. It will appeal to a wide range of readers, to avid mystery fans, to history buffs and to all Ripperologists. It sets the murders into a social context and details all the suspects. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book but poor packaging 8 Dec 2011
If you are a fan of the mystery behind Jack the Ripper, then this is the book for you. It is full of amazing facts and pieces of evidence to search through yourself. The only drawback to ordering this online is the packaging for it. Having loved it so much myself(mine was shop bought), I decided to get it for someone for christmas but i was really disappointed with the condition of the book, the spine was damaged on the front and back, the cover was even coming away on the back. I dont feel the item was correctly packaged for the weight of it at all.
But other than that the book itself is BRILLIANT!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Glossy Introduction with a gimmick. 29 Aug 2009
This well made book is a good glossy introduction to a subject which still haunts us today. The documents, with one exception, are well reproduced: I had a genuine chill when I held & read the 'Dear Boss' letter [although not from the murderer, probably]. It is a bit gimmicky though & I'm only giving three stars for two reasons [1] as it lacks a map of Whitechapel at the time, which could have been easily included to give it that extra dimension of orientation. The real depth of this matter is in wider cultural/social/economic context: the Ripper as the foreshadow of the 20th Century. So if you already have some background knowledge skip this as it is [2] quite expensive for an intro [despite Amazon's discount.] So check out the other cheaper books available on Amazon instead.
