5.0 out of 5 stars Early Nicklaus instruction - at his best 13 Nov 2011
The debate will last forever about the best golfer who ever lived, especially as it is actually impossible to compare like with like as equipment changes have placed different clubs and balls in the hands of new generations. Debate about the most successful golfer is more straightforward and few would argue with Jack Nicklaus as first choice. He dominated his era and his playing years were many.

This large format book is a compilation of a long-running series of instruction articles in "Golf Digest" and, like his other golf activities, it is meticulous and comprehensive in its scale. Each page is filled with colourful cartoon instruction on almost every aspect of the game and explained in an easily accessible and sensible style which makes the meanings clear. The language is appropriate, accurate and very descriptive of his style, making the instruction very helpful indeed. The drawings are very clear and accurate, conveying all that needs to be seen very simply and a great credit to the artists and art directors.

This is not simply a book of golf instruction, i.e. physical aspects of the swing; it is about the much-ignored aspect of the game (at least by amateurs and certainly during the era in which he played at the top. It is about managing a golf course, plotting a sensible way around one to score well with the swing taken to the golf course that day. One of his hallmarks was his ability to score well, even when not swinging well and to plot his way round without wasting silly strokes. (Although "not swinging well" for Nicklaus was an entirely different experience than most amateurs saying the same!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Golf Tournament Book 4 April 2001
By Clay Ballentine - Published on
I don't need another book on the golf swing. I wanted another copy of this book for the "Thoughts" it has. This is clearly the best "non-swing" golf book ever written and the illustrations are terrific. If you have ever played or are considering playing in golf tournaments, you need this book.
This was a used copy, from Alibris, and it is in better condition than many new books I've bought, I would highly recommend Alibris and Amazon for any used book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST golf instruction book... 16 April 2012
By LifeSpentLearning - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read, for mid-high handicappers. I have bought this book 4 times in the last 20 years to give away as gifts to new golfers/friends. Simple to read, simple to understand, nice illustrations on EVERY page... I cannot say ENOUGH positive things about this book. It's not the "only" book you should own/read on golf. But it should be mandatory ! You'll reference this over and over as you encounter little hiccups in your game. Or want to know how to do certain shots. It even discusses course management in order to help you improve your scores.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTE BEST by THE ABSOLUTE BEST 14 Feb 2011
By John M. Perron - Published on
I have been playing competitive tournament golf for more than half my life. I have read literally hundreds of golf books from cover to cover. I have owned this book almost as long as Hogan's Power Golf, and do agree that Playing Lessons is the the finest non-swing golf book around. The fact is, that it took me from scoring in the 80s down to the 60s in my teens. Simple imagery presented instruction which will simplify and revolutionize one's approach to nearly every shot scenario, condition, and mental aspect of the game that one might encounter. It equally and successfully presents situational concepts as well as larger self awareness/overall development concepts in a way that makes sense for anyone between ages 10 and 110. And realisitically, you have to ask yourself, "who would know more about golf strategy and player development than "The Bear" himself?" This is simply THE ABSOLUTE BEST golf book for young players to have on their shelf if they want to be serious about becoming a solid player. It was written by THE ABSOLUTE BEST player ever.
5.0 out of 5 stars Paper route as a kid... 13 Mar 2012

This was the first thing I read after I delivered all my papers on my paper route as a teenager. This is by far the best ever instructional book. No fuss. No excess thoughts. This is what got me to shoot par before high school.
