4.0 out of 5 stars An exciting story 27 Jun 2012
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This exciting tale for early teens takes the form of a Quest story. Jack and his school friend Steph set off to discover Jack's true parentage. They have help in the form of Puck, from the Realm of Faerie but are similarly hindered by a number of creatures sent by a dark enemy. The latter's aim is to prevent the success of the quest and to kill Jack. When we learn of Jack's real parents it's not surprising that he has some unusual gifts.

This story is beautifully told and includes creatures from mythology which may be familiar to the reader. Some of the characters were brilliantly drawn and I really fell for them. The story deals with both lighter and darker emotions and does not talk down to the younger reader. A really good read for any age.

There's no doubt about it, D.M. Andrews s a great storyteller! His characters practically jump off the page producing wonderfully colourful images of his faerie creatures and their hidden realm; they come to life with each turning of the page. His use of mythical names further persuades you to continue reading this magical tale which you will find yourself utterly captivated by from the off.

The story is narrated by the protagonist Jack MacFadden, your average teenager, with parents who are seemingly less than bothered by his existence. During the course of a normal day, he encounters the class bully with unusual results landing him in hot-water with the Head and triggering events which catapult him on a dangerously mind boggling adventure with his faithful and longstanding imaginary friend Puck.

As they set out on their travels, two recruits are signed up to their plight: Steph who turns out to be extremely resourceful and unknowingly talented and Old Tom the Brownie who has been secretly holed up in the greenhouse at the bottom of Steph's garden.

Together they use their wits, skill and new-found powers to try and outwit the Redcaps and their traps. They face battles, riddles and problems often learning to overcome their fears and weaknesses; sticking together until their quest is complete.

This novella has plucky original characters that are on a mission to reclaim a throne which has been wrongfully taken. Written in a simplistic style with humorous quips, it will appeal to both children, teens and adults alike - a hugely enjoyable few hours of indulgent escapism which left me wondering what was to become of the group next!....

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack MacFadden 28 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jack MacFadden has just turned thirteen and his imaginary friend, Puck, tells him his true path in life.

This is a lovely magical story about a boy who discovers the faerie world and the faeries that are no against him. It's a light story, but doesn't talk down to the audience.

As an (allegedly) grown woman, I like reading these stories. They take me out of the real world and remind me I used to be thirteen years old, a long, long time ago lol. I'd be interested in a further story to see how Jack's story furthers.
