5.0 out of 5 stars A SHARK IN THE HAND 30 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase
I am a kite maker. I used to make patterns for cutting out my fabric from thin card but found they only lasted for one kite and then got damp and unreliable so I decided to try cutting them from 3mm 8x4 sheets of MDF. This presented problems when I tried a jigsaw and found the sheet vibrated so much I could not follow the cutting line, particularly round curves.

A Tyzack dovetail saw proved ideal for cutting straight lines but for curves I needed a narrower blade. In the end I bought several modern Compass saws - all approxmately the same length and all with the same 7-8TPI but with different blade depths. In the event I am glad I did not just buy one.

On trying them out I found they were strikingly different due to different tooth shape. The first and cheapest one -marketed by Silverline- had a blade completely powder coated in lurid orange epoxy and double angled Japanese style SHARK teeth but these would hardly make an impression on MDF. It was however very good for cutting green tree branches without clogging and so I will reserve it for that. That coated blade will not easily rust.

I next tried the IRWIN Jack Xp3047-300. It went through MDF faster than my Bosch Jigaw but it was so aggressive I found it tended to wander from side to side. For many of the cuts I started with my arm fully extended across the MDF sheet which is easy with this saw due to its long open grip. The tendency to wander did not matter as I was cutting pieces 1/2" outside the line so I could fine trim them later.

To fine trim I used an older style compass saw with a hard plastic grip-the Jack Prestige-and was amazed at how much more controllable it was. On examination I found the blade was slightly thicker and stiffer and the teeth had slightly less set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sturdy saw 26 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase
Was recommended to be purchased with cat flap and for approx 5, seemed a good idea. Certainly helped with the job - cutting through UPVC door panel (after starting things off with a few drill holes). One of those tools that won;t be used very often but will be perfect for the occasional job when other saws are too large. Blade has a good cover too - thick clear plastic protector that fits nice and tightly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat flap fitting made easy 31 Dec 2013

This was perfect for installing a cat flap in a wooden door. Drilled a couple of circular 1 inch holes then connected them using this saw, very handy and good for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Irwin Key Hole Saw 1 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase
I needed a slim saw that I could use to cut out the hole for a cat flap, and something that could not only saw around corners but that would fit into a small hole to begin sawing. This saw was better than a hacksaw, as it did not need a frame that made a hacksaw unsuitable for this job. I could not use a jigsaw blade either, as I find a jigsaw cutter hard to control. It is a good strong saw for such a slim blade, and did a great job. I was very pleased.

2.0 out of 5 stars Upvc door catflap fail. 11 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase
Purchased this after researching a cheaper method to make a hole in a upvc door for a catflap. I couldn't stretch to a jigsaw so opted for this. Unfortunately I did not get on with this item at all and would recommend a jigsaw instead. Not sure I will find another use for it so for me it was a waste of money.
