been a fan of the books for ages. I love the fact that its not trying to copy american or british thrillers, its distinctly Australian. Ok , yes it takes a while to tune your ear to the accent and idioms, but that just makes you concentrate more and enjoy it more. Guy Pierce plays the character brilliantly and the supporting cast do just that... support. I dont think I have seen a better interpretation of a novel .

Bad Debts

Jack Irish is an Australian thriller, with Jack Irish played by Guy Pearce. After losing his wife he quits his job as a lawyer and turns to doing odd jobs. When an old client is murdered he starts digging into what happened and is the way with thrillers discovers more than he bargained for.

As well as the investigation itself there's other threads bubbling away in the background, the horse racing thread stands out as it has a couple of fun characters. Pearce does a good job with the main characters and the story progresses well.

It's not an action based thriller, which I liked, sometimes it's nice just to watch an investigation unfold.

Worth a watch.

Black Tide

Black Tide is another film starring Guy Pearce as Jack Irish, a part time investigator who gets himself caught up in another investigation. As before he finds himself in over his head. He's a fun character to watch in action and again it's good to watch the investigation unfurl without unnecessary excitement.

The same background characters from the first film are back. The youth club in the pub, the dodgy horse racing pair.

All in all a fun watch.

Peter Temple, is an Australian author I have followed for quite awhile. Now, two of his books have been turned into a series, 'Jack Irish'. I was pleasantly surprised to find how very good they are.

The opening sequence starts with a bombshell as Jack an up and coming lawyer is chatting with his wife about a home furnishing. An old client comes running into the office and a startling event takes place. The beginning credits roll. Some time later, we find Jack trying to get over his misery. He has gone through a drinking and gambling phase, and has now given up law and has become a would-be carpenter, debt collector, and working for a man who bets on horses. Jack is played by Guy Pearce, and it seems he has become Jack Irish, this role is his. Handsome, reckless, recovering from trauma, he plays this character to the 'T'.

Another of Jack's old clients has called and left messages and when Jack picks them up, the man is found dead. This leads Jack on a search to find the question and the answer. Some of the answers reach into high political quarters, where he is not welcomed. A journalist, played by the beautiful. Marta Dusseldrop, is on the story and together they follow every lead. One of the most interesting sidelights of this film is the bar Jack uses as a sometime office. It is filled with old fellas who love soccer and knew his dad. He is a welcome part of the group, so to speak, and this gives some insight into his background.

'Jack Irish' is a terrific series, great characters with Australia as it's background. What could be better?

Recommended. prisrob 10-22-13

For fans of Temple's books, this will satisfy without blowing away. I was told that Pearce was too clean cut for the JI role but I thought he did well. All of the components of the JI series are here: inner-city Melbourne, the Fitzroy supporters club, the race rigging and plunges, the all-pervasive corruption in Australian society. They didn't quite come together but very nearly. Definitely worth a look.

These first two hour long DVDs are hopefully only the beginning of many adventures with my favourite new unconventional hero Jack Irish. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this hot OZ series. Bring it on!

Interesting detective stories set in Melbourne with some clever asides that stop the stories from being too dark. The scenes in the pub with the old Fitzroy Football Club fans are very amusing. I am looking forward to the next collection of Jack Irish stories.

Guy Pearce is a terrific actor! A plus drama. The filming location is terrific and except for a little trouble with the accent, a wonderful series.
