During the late 1950s and early 1960s were many great instrumentalists and instrumental groups, especially from both sides of the Atlantic including,THE SHADOWS, LORD ROCKINGHAM'S XI, JOHN BARRY SEVEN, THE TORNADOS,and from America came,JOHNNY AND THE HURRICANES, DUANE EDDY, SANDY NELSON, THE PILTDOWN MEN,to name just a few.
This great CD covers all the singles[both sides]of-LORD ROCKINGHAM'S XI-who released five great rocking singles from 1958/59-and again in 1962. Only two of these singles hit the U.K. charts,-HOOTS MON-a number 1 hit in 1958,and-WEE TOM-a number 16 hit in 1959. Some live tracks from "OH BOY" TV show are also included. As are several tracks by other artists, including by,JACK GOOD'S FAT NOISE,and,JACKIE DENNIS WITH HARRY ROBINSON.29 tracks are on this CD.
This great CD also has an informative 4 pages booklet, detailing about the instrumentalists and their records.
My main reason for buying this CD was because it includes all the singles both "A" and "B" sides of-LORD ROCKINGHAM'S XI-.
-The following is the complete list of five singles[both sides]that were released in U.K.with-LORD ROCKINGHAM'S XI-.
THE SQUELCH / FRIED ONIONS 1958.
HOOTS MON / BLUE TRAIN 1958.
WEE TOM / LADY ROCKINGHAM,I PRESUME? 1958-charting in early 1959.
RA-RA ROCKINGHAM / FAREWELL TO ROCKINGHAM 1959.
NEWCASTLE TWIST / ROCKINGHAM TWIST 1962.
Only two of these singles would chart in the U.K.[as mentioned in my text].But i like all these instrumentals[both sides].
Regards,Bill.

Jack Good was the only guy in the U K who understood rock'n'roll which was only a couple of years old at the time.Forget about all this "first rock'n'roll record" nonsense in the U K it mmeant Bill Haley,Elvis,Gene Vincent and at the time of this event Clif Richard with Tommy Steele as the first U K rock'n'roller. He wrote a column for a music paper and enthused about American music in general but never as biased as the then new breed of Rock Knockers who wanted this awful stuff out of the way and Tony Bennett restored to the chart top.
So Good founded Lord Rockingham's IV working on the idea that jazzmen were the only ones who could play the music-which was true as virtually all the records were made by session men. There was nothing like them at the time-Tony Crombie's Rockets and Art Baxter's Rockin' Sinners had long gone
So Lord Rockingham's IV were more or less the same ones who did many Decca sessions such as those by then new Scots sensation Jackie Dennis who is included here.I once saw him on a TV feature series in the 80s and in came this old guy with not much hair, glasses and was probably in his 50s but looked older.I think he'd been a bus driver or something but spoke about his time as a rock'n'roll star who appeared on the Perry Como Show. The Americans saw him as another Laurie London figure who wore a kilt but unlike the latter who topped their charts with a rocking version of a Gospel song he never had an American career but carried it on in Germany who would soon here a more authentic sound of rock'n'roll via the Liverpool groups sent over there

Hoots Mon! 29 Oct 2009
By R. Kane
Might just be my imagination, but the version of "Hoots Mon" found here doesn't sound like my old 45 on Decca! I love this stuff, me - British instrumentals before The Beatles!
