Book Description

A "green Indiana Jones" set in Brazil in the not-too-distant future. Brazil is bankrupt and the president has put the Amazon forest up for auction. Carmen Macedo, a journalist from London, is sent to investigate an environmental disaster and finds herself on a mission to save the country of her birth. Her journey takes her through the cities of apocalyptic Brazil into the deepest Amazon, and she is forced to confront the tragic events of her childhood. She meets bizarre and colourful characters, encounters 'savage' Indians and finds herself drawn to the mysterious Braga.

All the author's royalties from Jabujicaba go to rainforest conservation work in Brazil.

"Jabujicaba paints a sensuous picture of a living, breathing rainforest. With its closely woven plot, charismatic characters and sense of impending danger, the book is a page turner" - the World Land Trust

"Rosa da Silva delivers a thought-provoking environmental message about the state of the Brazilian rainforest through a powerful, yet subtle story of corrupt politics, covered up disasters, and exploration of the intricacies in the rainforest’s ecology." The Oxford Student.

"This most familiar landscape of sights and idioms reminds those who know the country, of why we love Brazil and inspires those who haven’t, to know it better." Amazonian Anthropolgist

"your writing reminds me – and this is a great compliment – of Marquez in its richness and fantastical elements." Literary Agent for full reviews and information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action and adventure in Brazil 24 April 2014

Indiana Jones meets Garcia Marquez - with its clever plot, compelling characters and stunning descriptive settings, 'Jabujicaba' is both beautifully written and an action packed thriller in the best tradition. The story unfolds in a Brazil so burdened with international debt that that the President has put the Amazon rainforest up for auction. In the political intrigues and competition surrounding the auction Carmen, a Brazilian born journalist from London, and Braga, an adventurer from Rio, battle to discover the truth about sinister events of the past, in a bid to save their country. I had to keep reading, 'Jabujicaba' is a real page turner. I'd recommend 'Jabujicaba' to anyone interested in Brazil and in the environment - a really good story with underlying messages about conservation.

I'd never heard of this author (I think this is her debut?) but I really hope there's more in the pipeline. A must-read for anyone planning a trip to Brazil and/or with an interest in green issues. A real page-turner with an important message and a big twist at the end.

I loved this book - the beautiful imagery and cast of richly painted characters make this so much more than just an adventure story, and the vivid descriptions of Brazil and the Amazon rainforest have left me itching to visit myself. And with proceeds supporting rainforest conservation efforts, this is a feel-good read on all counts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically well-written and gripping plot 23 April 2014
A really unusual writing style, but one which captures the essence of Brazil. I love Carmen! I think she is fantastic - a real eco-warrior who we can all learn from. Looking at the book website, I'm glad I bought this as it is going to a really great cause. Buy this book!!
