Product Description

Product Description

Sharks were a British rock band, formed in November 1972, by the ex-Free bass player, Andy Fraser, upon his departure from Free and guitarist Chris Spedding (Motor Bikin' fame) . They were signed to Island Records, and were rated by critics, especially for Chris Spedding's guitar work. Here, although Andy Fraser left the band, Chris Spedding leads the way to the second album release. This is the second of three albums recorded by the band and considered to be one of their best work. This follows the re-issue of their first album on Talking Elephant last month

Review

Talking Elephant again gives us a superb remaster that really brings the music to life and makes me have greater appreciation for this more soulful sophmore release. I thought the lp was dull and robbed the music of the drama and nuance it has here. Spedding is easier to hear in multiple layers and Snips turns in much better vocals than the first lp - but the first lp had some heavy riffs and rocked harder than this. Expect more blue-eyed soul and slow burners here.In the same way J.Geils was tasty with his notes, so is Spedding on this outing. --Groover Amazon

The albums I review on here tend to be those that I treasure. I first saw this band supporting Captain Beefheart around 1974. They had begun life as one of the projects started when Free disbanded. Bass player Andy Fraser joined up with session guitarist Chris Spedding, drummer Marty Simon and singer Snips to form Sharks. They made one album 'Fresh Water' before The Free connection was severed with Frasers departure. In came Busta Cherry Jones on bass and Nick Judd with some lovely electric piano.
Jab It In Yore Eye was a fine effort, once again based in bluesy rock. Spedding plays some fine guitar including slide and some soulful fills. Simon drives the band with shuffling rhythms and Snips is a powerful front man, singing in the style of Rod Stewart or Bob Seger which rightfully places him mid atlantic! The songs to my mind are stronger than on the Fraser album.
There is no filler but highlights for me are 'Baby Shine A Light', 'Surrender' and my all time favourites 'Cocaine Blues' and 'Sophistication'. One listen to the latter track will convince you that at least one member of the Clash rated this as highly as me! Why Sharks didn't make it I don't know. Perhaps the next album would have been the one. Snips went on to join the Baker Gurvitz Army and Spedding went 'Motorbikin'

This was one of my favorite bands of my distant youth. It is a very evocative sound with strong and economic playing by Chris Spedding and the guys. Snips was one of the best vocalists of that time, and wrote some great lyrics.

Sharks absolute fantastic band, have got their 1st LP and cd, plus their later 3rd cd, how this group didn't achieve super group status will always mystify me
