Product Description

The story of the rise and transfer of ex-Manchester United and Holland defender Stam. He talks frankly about the personalities at Old Trafford, winning trophies and his surprising move to Lazio.

Now recognised as one of the best central defenders in the world, Jaap Stam was a huge influence in Manchester United’s 1998/99 Treble winning season and continues to earn the plaudits for his performances at both club level and for Holland.

In this his first book, Stam reveals what it is like to play for the biggest and most famous football club in the world, sharing the limelight with the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Roy Keane.

On boss Alex Ferguson, he explores the myth behind the man and his methods, and talks about training and match preparation, dressing room secrets at the time of their Treble success, and the transfer saga involving his former PSV team-mate Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

There is also the hitherto untold story of the problems he encountered when first settling in at Old Trafford, how he almost missed out on his dream move, and the way he was written off at the time as ‘a waste of money’ by the press.

On the international stage, Stam looks at the strengths and weaknesses of British players compared to foreign counterparts like Dennis Bergkamp and Edgar Davids, while at Dutch club level he focusses on his relationship with key personalities like Bobby Robson and Ronaldo.

Revised and updated to include season 2002/03, which includes a shocking and swift £18m transfer to Rome giants, Lazio, his role in Holland's failure to qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals and his recent suspension following a positive text for the banned substance nandrolone.

What a season.

Jaap Stam's autobiography makes a good read, particularly if you are a Manchester United fan wanting to know more about life behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

This paperback version is fully updated to include all the details of Stam's fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson last summer....which some people believe was connected to some of the stuff written in Stam's original book.

To sum the book up....controversial, but a good read.

A Must Buy 9 Dec 2001
By CSCOTT
Format:Hardcover
At first I wasnt sure about this book because of all the hype and fuss flying around. The book that lost Jaap his place in the best football team of the 90's. This book goes into detail about Jaap and how he became one of the best defenders in football. It also tells about the ins and outs of football and gives a sneek behind the scenes look on how football works. Probably the best autobiography I have read to date.

Over paid and over rated 12 Jan 2002
By Simon Larby Clements - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Whilst the book itself is quite well written the contents reveal a professional footballer expecting sympathy for the fact that he has to travel long distances for out of season friendly matches and he had to sacrifice a lump sum payment to play for one of the best teams in the world. There is little real insight into the professional game or recognition that the top players are priveleged individuals who are extremely well paid but who have responsibilities to their adoring public. The book fails to provide a good insight into the pleyers views on the key issues facing the sport. It is a major disappointment.
Great Book!! 27 May 2010

Even if you are a fan of the premier league, and not Manchester United, I recommend this book highly. I gives you a different view as to what it is we think we know about this sport and the players in it. The book has some funny moments too. It is a good buy!
Some points.... 25 July 2005

... he have, but overall he complains to much. What he has to give up, Ferguson yells, Keane says that....bla bla bla - and of course Stam never/selldom does wrong in/outside the pitch.
