Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The XV-S302 is JVC's stab at the budget market and despite the attractive price it stacks up very well against its rivals. It looks pretty workmanlike, although the metallic finish is rather swish. The remote control is a nice comfortable shape and there's a good set of connectors including a SCART socket wired for RGB output.

The picture quality is one of the JVC's strong points. The brightness and contrast is good, delicate tones are a trifle muddy in places but overall the quality belies the price. Sound is up to the mark and it certainly makes a decent enough go at playing audio CDs to double as a CD player. The ability to play discs of MP3 files is a useful extra too. The range of DVD scanning speeds is impressive, from multiple slow motion speeds to super fast in both directions, something not all players are capable of.

Like most modern DVD players it'll cope with most types of CD disc and, despite the documentation, will play DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs too. It can also cope with playing NTSC discs on PAL televisions. JVC's Scene Digest makes it easy to navigate through DVDs without proper scene selection by displaying the first frame of each chapter. Other goodies include a virtual surround sound which attempts what is perhaps the impossible, but it is worth experimenting with. There are a few other touches too, such as a display you can dim. All in all the XV-S302 comes across as a player that should cost more than it does, which is always nice. --Miles Berkeley

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value For Money!, 2 Jan 2003
This is the third DVD player i have owned and by far the best. For the price you pay you get fantastic quality and it plays CD R/RW so i can play CDs ive recorded on my computer on my DVD player. It has 3D phonic sound which is as good as can be expected without surround sound speakers. The only thing i would fault is that the buttons on the remote control are quite small and close together making it easy to press the wrong one, but compared with every other aspect of the DVD player this is no reason not to buy it. It is quite slim and modern to look at with a silver finish to improve the fashion element. Overall an excellent DVD player for the price you pay!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great piece of work., 7 Jan 2003
By A Customer
If you are looking for a great DVD player then look no further. I researched the market and decided on what I wanted my DVD player to do. I choose this JVC model because it offered everything I was looking for and more. I wanted my DVD player to play DVD's from around the world and being a multi-region player it can do so. I wanted it to convert NSTC signals to PAL (so you can watch Region 1 DVD's). This JVC model has this software to enable you to do so. The remote control is rather ugly but don't be put off, as the features it has to offer are easily accesible and you soon get the hang of it, that is if you never used a DVD before. It has a grest stylish look to it. I predict this JVC XV-S302 is going to a very popular DVD player as an entry model(especially as its so competitively priced at Amazon).

4.0 out of 5 stars Plays it all, 14 Mar 2003
By A Customer
For those of you wanting to know if this player will play your dvd-rw or dvd+rw discs, the answer is yes. For some reason JVC deny this, saying that it will only do what it says on the box. However, rest assured I have tested it myself and it works fine.
The picture quality is excellent as well, unlike some others I have had the misfortune to trial.
It will also playback NTSC discs automatically on a PAL only tv, so you really can watch films from ANY region.
The only slight drawback, if your tv screen is square as opposed to widescreen, is that you have to watch the film in widescreen mode, leaving lots of blank screen top and bottom. With a better zoom feature you would be able to zoom in and avoid this problem.
But, overall, it's great value for money.
