After recently upgrading my 15" Mid-2012 Macbook Pro with 16gb RAM and a 256gb Crucial M4 SSD, I was left with a ridiculously fast Mac, but not enough storage space for all my photos and music. I decided to get one of these and replace the Mac's SuperDrive as I can't remember the last time i needed to use a CD or DVD anyway. The item was delivered quickly, and I got straight to work using a very well put together tutorial video from the internet. Damn it's fiddly! You really do need to ensure that the screwdriver's you're using are magnetic, or you'll be there for hours trying to get the screws back in! I had to stick my wife's magnetic name-badge that she uses for work onto my screwdriver to make it magnetic! The build quality of the caddy is more than adequate and it does the job nicely. Just be REALLY CAREFUL when removing and replacing all the cables and connectors from your MBP's logic board! One slip, and you're in the Apple Store with an expensive bill! All in all, I'm really happy that I decided to perform this upgrade as I now have PLENTY of free space on my SSD and I have all of my music and photos in one place and don't have to bother with external HDD's except for backups (Time Machine will backup both drives by the way).

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what I needed it to do 21 Aug 2013
Well, it was fairly cheap and it does the job perfectly. You still have to recycle parts from the DVD drive in the Macbook Pro (such as the mounting bezel and the SATA cable) but that was expected. It does come with it's own screws.

I now have a Macbook Pro 15" late 2011 with 2 SSDs. I have a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 as my boot drive (in the new Omnibay) and a Crucial M500 960GB in the main HDD bay.

Note that with this Macbook model, you CANNOT run 2 hard drives or SSDs in SATA 3 (6GB/s) speeds. I found this the hard way, I should have researched before i bought my M500. Luckily, OCZ has a "Toolbox" that allows you to update firmware and perform fixes etc. - One of them being a fix that can change the negotiated link speed on "3" series drives ONLY (like my Vertex 3). So I changed the speed on my Vertex 3 to SATA 2 and now it all works perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for late-2011 Macbook Pro 15-inch 9 Nov 2012

Works perfectly to replace DVD drive in late-2011 15-inch Macbook Pro. Do be aware that although the SATA interface for the DVD drive is nominally able to cope with 6Gb/s transfer rates, it is only reliable with 3Gb/s or less, so be sure to check what transfer rate your SSD/HD uses.

This product works perfectly in my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011), used for my 500GB HDD while my SSD is in the primary SATA slot, installed it about 3 weeks ago and not had any problems. Would recommend for build quality and value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality and Easy to Install 13 May 2014

I bought this to put into a 2010 MacBook Pro. It's decent quality and I certainly don't foresee any issues with it in the future. Installation was easy and it allowed me to install a second 1TB hard drive into my laptop.

Just bear in mind that when you install a second hard drive, it has quite a big impact on the battery life.

Really happy with this.

Popped a SSD in this little fellow and put it in my Macbook Pro, reasonably straight forward task. Who uses optical drives these days, second hard drive is a far better thing.
