Book Description

The Juniper Networks routing platforms are becoming the go-to solution for core, edge, metro and remote office networks, and JUNOS software is behind it all. The operating system is so full of industrial-strength routing protocols and IP innovations that those treading into the world of JUNOS will need clarification, explanation, and a showcase example or two. Look no further. This JUNOS Cookbook provides it all and more.

Yes, you can mine through the 5,000 pages of documentation or take a two-thousand-dollar training course, but JUNOS's interprocess sophistication can be baffling unless you know the shortcuts and tricks, as well as those rays of illuminating comprehension that can come only from those who live with it. JUNOS Cookbook is the first comprehensive book about JUNOS software and it provides over 200 time-saving step-by-step techniques including discussions about the processes and alternative ways to perform the same task. It's been tested and tech-reviewed by field engineers who know how to take JUNOS out for a spin and it's applicable to the entire line of M-, T-, and J-series routers. JUNOS Cookbook will not only pay for itself the first few times you use it, it will make your network easier to manage and update.

"Aviva Garrett has done a tremendous job of distilling the features of JUNOS software in a form that will be useful for a wide audience-students, field engineers, network architects, and other networking professionals alike will benefit from this book. For many people, this is the only book on JUNOS they will need."Pradeep Sindhu, CTO and Founder, Juniper Networks

"This cookbook is superb. Aviva Garrett has masterfully assembled a complete set of practical real-world examples with step-by-step instructions. Security, management, routing: it's all here!"Stephen Gill, Research Fellow, Team Cymru

"A technical time-saver for any NOC or SOC working with JUNOS. It's clear, concise, and informative recipes are are an invaluable resource. "Scott A. McIntyre, Security Officer, XS4ALL Internet B.V

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential book for JUNOS... 19 Mar. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is very useful. Unlike other books I have, it does NOT contain chapters of endless explanations, waffle, or pretty diagrams, it just gets straight down to business with a well-organised index of "How do I do ...?" then the commands you need to get the job done, with a discussion paragraph after each entry which goes into a little more detail and points out any other config you may need, and things you may need to take into consideration.

If you have never touched a Juniper router before, this book is especially useful for getting started. If you are experienced, then you may learn a few new tricks and "good practice" from this book.

If you only touch Juniper routers occasionally, this book is a great quick reference to remind you what you need to do for the most common features. Also good for any NOC that needs just a quick reference how to drive a Juniper.

Note that this edition does not cover the new JUNOS flow-mode (ES) stuff, so it does not mention the new security policies, flow mode/packet mode options etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm buying a copy for each of my team members! 29 July 2008
By basebot
Format:Paperback
If you work with JunOS, you need this book. The authors know what they're talking about, and they have an uncanny knack for providing answers to the kind of questions we ask each other every week. It's also quite readable: these guys know their stuff, but you also get a feeling they enjoy it too. We have a well-thumbed copy in the office, but I'm just going to buy a bunch of them and recommend it to my team for bedtime reading at home! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for even JUNOS experts 4 May 2006
By Ridha Hamidi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Even though you've been configuring or operating Juniper routers for long time and you think you are familiar enough with JUNOS, you'll still learn something you don't know from this book; the "Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also" structure helps to quickly find and read the exact information you need and nothing more, if you don't need to, just like you would use a standard dictionary.

If you operate a Juniper router from time to time, or even on a daily basis, this book should be always on your desk, handy to grab, so you can use it whenever you need to answer a configuration or operational question, when you exhausted reading the standard configuration guides and the online help, and just before calling for help from a friend or from Juniper's Technical Assistance Center (JTAC).

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in GOLD! 30 July 2007
By Gordon Ewasiuk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I would give this book six stars, if it were possible. This book presents a hands-on guide to JunOS. From installation and upgrade to routing protocols and MPLS -- this books spills the beans. The author provides "recipes" to acheive common routing tasks on JunOS quickly and without fluff. There are no filler chapters on theory, design, and protocols. Just plenty and plenty of practical, extremely useful recipes.

For anyone with a Cisco background, this book will get you up and running quickly with JunOS. Using this book, I was able to:

1) install JunOS;
2) upgrade JunOS;
3) configure NTP;
4) configure network interfaces;
5) configure BGP and ISIS;
6) enable a packet sniffer for troubleshooting purposes;
7) configure RADIUS authentication;
8) backup and restore JunOS configurations over the network;
9) and enable ssh access to a router running JunOS.

That's just scratching the surface of what this book covers. The more I read it, the more I learn -- and the more JunOS impressed me.

The absolutely best technology book I've purchased this year. Highly, highly recommend it to anyone using JunOS or moving to JunOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars The JUNOS Cookbook is a real joy 18 July 2006
By Jason Abercrombie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Aviva's flair for concise explanation makes this book a real joy. It's rare that I read just one recipe. If you want a concentrated dose of JUNOS that's sweet and easy to swallow, then get this book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Very good technical Cookbook 19 April 2012
By screwy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I work mainly in a Cisco driven environment, and use the Cisco cookbook from O'reilly as a useful utility in my day to day work. I bought this cookbook on the pretence that if its has good as the Cisco one then I would have no worries understanding the Junos IOS and applying it to our new Juniper routers we have procured - well it hasn't let me down in anyway.

Its clear, concise and very easy to understand.

I attended a two day Juniper course last year mainly for the forthcoming arrival of these routers and I can definitely say this book has taught me more in the two days of reading it than the two days of the instructor led waffle I had to sit through.

I am now considering purchasing the Enterprise switching cookbook also.

Happy reading!
4.0 out of 5 stars An essential introduction 28 Jun. 2009
By A Careful Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a must-have for newcomers to JUNOS. It does not try to explain the theory behind the features being configured, but if you already know how to set up other kinds of routers and simply want to know how to do the same thing on JUNOS, this is the right book to have. The focus on examples versus tutorial information works well, but there is still enough background material to help understand JUNOS-specific features "by accident."
