Product Description

Synopsis

The Church has a problem with Judges, it is so earthy, puzzling, primitive and violent. It falls under the category 'embarrassing scripture'. Such an attitude is, of course, wrong. This title analyses the major literary and theological themes discovered in each section.

Professor Davis is a marvellously entertaining writer who makes these Old Testament narratives live. Although he has all the technical resources to write an academic(and dull)tome his erudition is not displayed for effect. He also avoids the usual pompous conventions like the third person and the passive voice and concentrates on making his commentary explain. His big theme is that these narratives are not there to tell the stories of Ehud, Gideon and Samson. God is the hero throughout. It is the Lord who continually rescues a people sunk in sin.

This is an excellent book readily accessible to lay people; it emphasises the saving power of an infinitely loving God, the short memory of people whom he has rescued from dire situations and his holiness that cannot tolerate idolatry. The relevance for the 21st century is obvious.
I highly recommend this to everyone who seeks to understand that the God of the Old Testament is exactly the same God revealed in Jesus.

The book of Judges tends to be a no go area where many modern Christians are concerned. For one there's far too much bloodshed for our modern sensibilities and two it's in the Old Testament which many ill-informed Christians tend to think of as confusing and boring. However, I defy anyone to say the book of Judges is boring after reading Dale Ralph Davis excellent commentary. As a commentary it ticks all the right boxes, the text is well explained and any issues with translation are dealt with. But to stop there would only be giving half the story because this is a lot of fun to read part from the many other issues. As always Dale Ralph Davis's sense of humour shines through but this hardly makes it a lightweight commentary as it never loses sight of God's grace and mercy towards His people even when they are at their worst! I found this incredibly helpful when I was doing a series of Bible studies in the book of Judges at the church I pastor and, as I've said already, it was certainly the most fun out of all the commentaries I had on Judges to use.

Judges is a book that does not lend itself to Sunday School colouring in! Yet there are some powerful redemptive themes flowing through it. D.R.Davis is a gifted commentator and this book is excellent for lay-readers through to Pastors. A clear succinct guide to Judges with useful illustrations that open up the book for preaching.
