Not a John F Kennedy biopic, but a film of New Orleans' attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into the President's assassination, JFK is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with serious intelligence and ultimately proves itself a great film. Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream (a theme further explored by the director in Nixon and Any Given Sunday). JFK doesn't reveal exactly what happened in Dallas on 22 November 1963--those who knew generally took their secrets to the grave--but marshals a vast wealth of facts and plausible theories, trusting the audience to draw its own conclusions. Following less than a year after Dances With Wolves (1990), these two epics mark the high point of Kevin Costner's career and the vast supporting cast here, including Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, is superb. Quite simply the best American political film ever made. --Gary S Dalkin

Product Description

This historical thriller stars Kevin Costner and features a powerful supporting cast, including Donald Sutherland, Jack Lemmon and Ed Asner. Upon examining the Warren Commission report on President Kennedy’s assassination, New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (Costner) suspects that there is more to the story than the public is being told.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to make fact from fiction 22 Dec 2003
This is one fantastically made film, Stone mixes his own fictional footage with genuine historical footage until you don't know which one is the truth, this powerful movie bombards you with information and will not stop. Throughout the film, Garrison (Costner) and his team put foreward every conspiracy theory known to man (aside from Elvis at the Grassy-Knoll) before deciding on their prefered option and hammering it home in a riveting final court-room scene.
I for one don't believe that Lyndon Johnson was waiting for a call from Clay Shaw saying "Kennedy's been killed and I want my money". Oliver Stone is not a historian and this is not history, as Stone said, this film is merely a counter-myth to the myth that is the Warren Report and that is what it does. One only has to watch the trial scene to realise that the Warren Report was fiction and although Garrison's proposition of a government-planned conspiracy is a little off, it does make you think and that is what a good film should do.
The supporting cast is excellent with Tommy-Lee Jones earning a Best Supporting-Actor Oscar, the music is superb and powerfully atmospheric.
A good buy for anyone who likes to think and an ideal subject for discussion

5.0 out of 5 stars JFK for Just Fantastic Knowledge 23 July 2008
By Lat
Why does the film JFK work? It confirms what most people know to be the truth. That JFK was assassinated by a conspiracy. Whether Clay Shaw was involved or not may never be known but just because there has never been a confession by the powers that be doesnt mean the majority of the ordinary people are silly. (You cannot shoot someone in the back of the head for the head to go backwards. Thats just silly. Its so obvious to the eye that the second shot was fired from the front. The magic bullet theory was also silly. How can a bullet cause so much damage to two men and still look pristine? What happened to the president's brain? Where did it disappear when it was meant to be examined to get the bullet trajectory? Why was a proper autopsy not conducted? How could the chief suspect be killed in a building surrounded by police? How did the assassin of the chief suspect himself die mysteriously? How did witnesses that someone shot from the grassy knoll die in strange circumstances? Why after the shooting did the majority of people who heard and saw the puff of smoke from a gunshot start running for the grassy knoll? Did everyones ears deceive them? Why were there people already standing at the knoll showing fake FBI badges not letting anyone come forward?) Need I go on?

JFK is a film that carefully picks the flaws in the Warren Report and there are far too many flaws in that report for it to be accurate or to fill this picture. In fact you can say the film JFK was more accurate than the Warren Report itself and that was without government backing.

It cleverly shows real footage with careful reconstruction so much so that you really cannot tell the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Film 12 Dec 2010
For JFK conspiracy theorists this is a classic film whichever version of events you choose to believe. However it is important to remember that it is just a Hollywood film. I for one don't think most of what happens in this film is factual, but that does not detract from the fact that it is an excellent piece of cinema and does make you think. All the actors turn in fine performances most notably Tommy Lee Jones, doesn't he always!! Book yourself a spare three hours on a Saturday evening and get drawn in to total conspiracy madness!!

Oliver Stone created a modern movie classic when he directed the highly controvercial JFK . 40+ years on it's still a hotly debated subject thats discussed to this very day 'WHO SHOT JFK'and WHY?. The conspiracy theory Oliver Stone puts forward makes for totaly engrossing viewing ,and in my oppinion most elements of it are VERY BELIEVABLE

It is a superbly acted movie , the ensemble cast are all terrific and there are no exceptions. It's choc full of very memorable and well acted scenes , with special mentions to Kevin 'JIM GARRISON' Costner + Walter 'SENATOR LONG' Matthau on the plane, Costner questioning Joe'DAVE FERRIE'Pesci , Costner questioning Tommy Lee' CLAY SHAW 'Jones and finaly the COURT CASE itself , it's very enthralling , and if I had been on the jury I would have sent SHAW DOWN [ HEHEHE ]....its that believable

Its beautifuly shot combining the original 'ABRAHAM ZAPRUDER' Dealy Plaza video footage with STONES own superbly directed shots

Costner/Garrison [courtroom scene] tearring apart and CASTING DOUBT on the LONE GUNMAN + MAGIC BULLET 3 SHOT THEORY is pure CINEMA GOLD
