Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Why is it going to work this time?

JfDI! is the definitive strategy for getting the personal change you seek. It works where other approaches fail because it accepts that for personal change we must have intellectual understanding PLUS emotional engagement.

For change we must have the desire but we must want to act upon that desire. We must:

· Have our brain engaged. We understand the relevant rational arguments, the personal cost-benefit analysis and the return on our time/energy investment.

· Have our heart engaged. We feel that this is right and we are excited about getting on with it – we are passionate about it.

· Have our gut engaged. We have strength of purpose, we are managing any fear and determined to make it happen.

JfDI! will work on any aspect of personal change, assuming you want it. In this book we are concerned with individuals who have recognised a change that they want and are having difficulty achieving it. The emphasis is on the process of change rather than simply its aims; this is not about changes that might make you a better person. We’ll leave you to decide which changes you want. The seven illustrative examples are not chosen as the best ones to do, simply as the ones that most people ask for help on.

From the Back Cover

WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE AS SOMEONE WHO IS SEEKING TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE?

Getting ideas? Probably not. Knowing what you really want? Possibly. Making it actually happen? Undoubtedly! The biggest challenge for all of us seeking personal change -- whether it's losing weight, studying for that MBA, spending more time with the kids, writing the book -- is making it happen!

Nicholas Bate, author of the acclaimed Being the Best will introduce you to the powerful approach of JfDI and take you through a series of simple but powerful step-by-step sequences to show you how it’s done.

And – once you know the essentials of the process – he’ll apply it to the top seven areas of personal change that his clients ask him for help with:

DESIRE 1: To lose weight, get fit, feel well and be attractive
DESIRE 2: To give up smoking
DESIRE 3: To write and publish a book
DESIRE 4: To achieve financial independence
DESIRE 5: To establish the career you want and/or set up your own business
DESIRE 6: To find and keep true love
DESIRE 7: To be happy

NOW JfDI! GET THIS BOOK. OPEN IT. AND START!
THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.

I purchased this book based on scorching recommendations on various messageboards around the net. People had nothing but praise for the man known as Nicholas Bate.
So, with some relish, I anticipated its arrival in the post and hoped to start planning my life with some detail for once! I read it from cover to cover and tried implementing the exercises. I was left with a strange sense of satisfaction and frustration!
Okay, here are the upsides. Firstly, it's the most detailed book you're ever going to come across in the self-improvement field. It's brilliantly packed with information. Secondly, it makes the fairly unique and important connection between action and emotions; this book recognises that we have to be emotionally engaged with our dreams/ambitions in order to make progress. Thirdly, it has a terrific 12 step process that involves phases including Brain, Emotion, Strategy, Tactics and Attention, Immersion and Momentum. By taking us through the 12 step process, we're made absolutely 100% aware of what we're doing, why we're doing it, how we feel about it and what will happen if we don't do it. You don't find this kinda detail in most books. There is a real sense of total and unconditional comprehension.
The downsides. Well, superficially, the book has a horribly tight binding!! This might seem a slight criticism, but it is in fact very, very annoying. The book itself is small and thick, tightly bound together. Given that this book is thoroughly detailed from start to finish, you'll find that you need to constantly refer to it in order to do your exercises. This is almost impossible given the tightness of the binding; I tried using heavy paperweights in order to keep the book spread open, but it still closed on me!

This book is a very practical guide to making changes in your life. The author has developed a strategy for success that can be applied to any goal, and this strategy contains such simple, straightforward, clearly explained steps towards reaching your goal that if you have the desire to make the change, and follow the guidelines, you simply cannot fail.
Nicholas Bate explains his strategy in general terms first and then shows how it can be applied to some of the things many people want to achieve; to lose weight/get fit, to give up smoking, to write a book, to find true love, for example. But even if your cherished ambition is not among the ones given as examples in this book you can use the method to work on any dream. This book shows you exactly how to get what you want; the rest is up to you!

This is yet another excellent book from the pen of Nicholas Bate. If, like many of us, you struggle to make real, permanent changes in your life then this book will really help. JFDI addresses the bit most books on change leave out, namely, how to actually change. It does this by breaking down the process of change into small chunks that are easy to follow, believable, tackles the likely blockers we all face, and pushes us to move forward. It's a pleasure to read, but doesn't let you off the hook. Far from it, this book really helps with what is a difficult area for many of us. Probably the best investment you can make in yourself : be brave and make that first step now...
