A singer's singer! 3 April 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
At 70 years of age, Helen Merrill pays hommage to her roots.
Her version of "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" is
what I would call "high art" Only a mature, intelligent singing-actress can attain such an effect. A living treasure.

Fresh 5 Aug 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is such a fresh album because of the arrangments and instrumentation and the easeful manner of delivery from those who are old masters. The repretoire is clearly not jazz business as usual. The accordian gives it a wonderful charm which blends well with voice of Helen and the incomparible soprano sax of Steve Lacy. It is great hearing Lacy improvise with the Croatian double reed instruments.
La Paloma is one of the most stunningly beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

A Great Jazz Singer Does It Again 24 July 2000
By N. Lucero - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Merrill, still in great voice as she nears 70, has produced a fine album, sort of a musical autobiography. A standout, in my opinion, is her rendition of "Lost In The Stars". I highly recommend this disc for aficionados of both Merrill and good singers in any genre.

A treasury of heterogeneous music performed by great artists 19 Sep 2011
By Bertrand Vermeer - Published on Amazon.com

What can I add to the reviews of 2000,2002 and 2011?
This CD is a sort of jewel-box. Regardless of the kind of music performed, from world-music (in this case from Croatia) to jazz, it is all off the highest musicality an good taste.
You would expect Helen Merril to sing a bit less intriguing than the did in earlier years, but nothing is less true than that: her voice and interpretation even increased in intensity and expressiveness.
She is supported on this recording by exquisite musicians who seem to know and respect what Helens voice and intentions need and what not.
A special mention for Sir Roland Hanna and Torie Zito for their sensitive accompaniment. And for drummer Terry Clarke who seems to take into account all requests of the music that's going on, a refined percussionist, even while accompanying a Croatian Music Ensemble! And not to forget George Mraz, especially for his bowing-technique!
I can imagine that Helen felt home not only because of the kind of music on this CD, but even so because of her very empathic colleagues.
After hearing this recording I felt happy to realise that this is not Helen Merrills final recording. I just ordered Lilac Wine.
