Book Description

11 Nov 2004
After his less than humble beginnings as a graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and member of the prestigious Concerts Lamoureux ,Ponty has performed and recorded with some of the greatest artists of all time. Sessions and collaborations include Al Di Meola, Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin and Frank Zappa to name but a few. This collection contains lead-sheets for 22 of Ponty's hottest compositions from his own significant recordings. These lead sheets are suitable for any C-tuning instrument, and the melodies are provided with chord symbols as a spring board for your own improvisations. A vital collection of Jazz masterpieces from this remarkable virtuoso.

5.0 out of 5 stars First - rate accurate leadsheets 7 Nov 2009
By Christopher J. Devine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
These lead sheets are clear, easy to read, and very accurate ( I have transcribed a substantial amount of jazz violin myself). While there are no fingerings, there are bowing indications at times for those that might have doubts and cues for instrumentation. The book is briefer than I would like; 22 selections hardly covers it for JLP's over 40 year recording career, but the selection covers material from 1970 through 2007. A great value especially if you nab one of the 10 dollar copies that surface here on Amazon.
Hopefully before Jean Luc retires he will reissue some of the full scores he published through Warner back in the early 80's along with new charts for the 'best of' his material since then. But until then, this is an acceptable substitute. The best way to learn, though, always, is to sit down with the recording and transcribe it yourself.
