I first saw JAG back at the start of Channel 5, & enjoyed pretty much everything I saw of it. Season 1 sets up the premise nicely & it is hard to believe that NBC cancelled the show. Fortunately, CBS picked it up, & a further 9 seasons showed what a wise decision that was.

The pilot episode is superb, with the great Terry O'Quinn as the CAG, & most of the rest of the season is fine, but it is let down by some real stinkers such as Déjà Vu, War Cries & The Prisoner. Set against that though are some great shows such as Shadow, Scimitar & any of the episodes with the incredible Andrea Thompson as the scheming & super-sexy Commander Krennick. It's also worth noting that for the sake of continuity, the episode Boot should be watched after the episode Defensive Action, or Harm's promotion & some of the other comments at the start of Boot don't make sense. Similarly, the season closer Skeleton Crew ends on a cliff hanger that is completely ignored at the start of the second season (a casualty of the aforementioned change from NBC to CBS). I understand though that there is some form of closure offered in an episode in Season 3. It is a shame though that the extras on the Region 1 release have not been carried across to this version.

All in all, if you like NCIS, you will enjoy JAG, particularly this first season. Well worth buying & watching.

I'd often seen bits of this series by accident on German TV, and it looked interesting, so I bought this first season, so that I would know the background from the start.

I found that the delicious dark-haired dolly I'd seen on German TV had been preceded by a delicious blonde-haired dolly. The hero himself was dashing and handsome, indeed, EVERYONE was handsome, even the old guys. One gets the impression that JAG is entirely populated by amazingly good-looking people, with all their own teeth and possessed of nearly infallible judgement. The whole thing is so glossy and glamorous and immaculately tailored and pressed that I occasionally felt the need to don sunglasses to avoid being dazzled. Nevertheless, the attractive cast play their parts well.

However, the problems lie with the whole premise of the thing. After an entertaining start, I thought it all became rather silly. Clearly "Perry Mason in uniform" would bore the butts off everyone in very short order, so ways had to be found to allow the handsome, dashing Lt. (later Lt. Cdr.) Rabb to go "off reservation", and to make off-the-cuff decisions that would probably lead to his being court-martialled and/or cashiered in the real world in very short order. And also to allow his delicious blonde computer-whiz dolly to strut her stuff, where ordinary computer mortals fail. At times, it seems more like "Top Gun" meets a combination of James Bond and Jason Bourne. We rarely see the inside of anything even vaguely resembling a courtroom. Part of the problem seems to be the US predilection for what the Germans call a "Happyend" that has to be delivered in one hour (minus adverts), and this necessarily cramps and requires excessive simplification for what could be quite promising story lines.

I first came across JAG on Hallmark a few years ago, tho' they've stopped showing it now. Donald P. obviously has very influential friends because the locations are genuine (either that or his FX team are the best on the planet) which makes the show more interesting and dynamic.

Some of the characters are so stereotypical (surely not ALL officers smoke huge cigars?) and some of the dialogue is cliched but it's so visually stunning (and their uniforms are so clean and sharp) that you're prepared to forgive these lapses. Worth every penny - particularly compared to current UK TV.

I've seen some episodes from later seasons of JAG and they can be more like Law and Order with a Navy storyline, but this first season is all about the action. A law court is rarely seen across the 23 episodes. But it's all good solid adventurous fun, with a well cast lead actor and support actors. Andrea Thompson(Babylon 5) comes into the show from about the half way part of this season and adds a lot to the show. There was only about two episodes in this season I found to be so-so, the rest excellent. The season ends on a cliffhanger and it isn't resolved in season 2. However the cliffhanger is mostly resolved in a flashback episode in season 3 called 'Deathwatch'.

JAG's one of those series like Friends and Frasier that's been around forever and is always getting repeated somewhere. The good news is that it's repeated for the reason that it's enjoyable and popular.

It's hard not to like the concept of JAG, which as everyone says is a cross between Top Gun and A Few Good Men (but with minimal court action, thank goodness). It has something for everyone - action, humour, exotic locations, great characters and sexy men and women in uniform. There's no shortage of good-looking women to back up hunky Harm, and special mention has to go to Commander Krennick who's so incredibly smokin' hot and sultry as a tough and gorgeous female lawyer that it's criminal that she only lasted one season. For men to aspire to, there's obviously Superman-like Harm and The Cag, who's a recurring character and just so macho, honest, decent and brave that you can't help wishing you could be him.

The storylines vary quite a bit, but often involve giving Harm the excuse to jump in a fighter jet and kick some ass, just like any other lawyer would do. He's not averse to fisticuffs, armed pursuit or taking part in special ops missions, so is pretty much an ordinary joe. Apart from that, the police seem non-existent, with only Harm and his beautiful sidekick on hand to solve pretty much any crime that happens in the Navy around the world.

Despite the ridiculousness of the stories, and having come to this after the wonderful NCIS which seems almost staid in comparison, this is a very entertaining and watchable show. I'm glad there's ten series to get through.
