3.0 out of 5 stars 'A Bit Frustrating' 5 July 2013

When 'The Definitive Story' was first shown on Channel 5 I was very excited about buying it as soon as it was out on DVD. When nothing saw the light of day for sometime thereafter I did some searching on the Internet to see if I could find some information as to the reason why? On a forum somewhere I found some posts detailing that the DVD when finally released was to come with a plethora of 'extras' (which at the time of the posts the exact nature of was still under discussion) and would include 'The Directors Cut' of the main feature as opposed to what was shown on Channel 5.

As you can quite imagine then, as an amateur Ripperologist, I was very much looking forward to getting my hands on this DVD. The blurb here on said nothing of any extras but a 'Directors Cut' was mentioned on the cover and so I was confident that this DVD would deliver nevertheless. Sadly, this has not turned out to be the case. Not only are there no extras the DVD case does not even include a booklet! While the feature itself is well worth owning and every bit as good as I recall it, the fact the makers of this film had managed to recreate the Whitechappel of 1888 using CGI graphics for use in the film had really gotten my hopes up that on the DVD there might be a chance we could get to 'walk around the area' ourselves as in a computer game. For this reason, I have to say I find this DVD somewhat of a let down. It is great to own a personal copy of the documentary but at 90 minutes long it is hard to see where the 'Directors Cut' side of things comes into it? If I remember correctly, the original series on Channel 5 ran over two one hour slots.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Definitive Story 7 Nov 2012

I have been following the case for more than 20 years. This is hands down, the best documentary on Jack the Ripper.

The CGI is amazing and really gives a sense of atmosphere. I never realized how dark the area was at the time.

This video is great for both beginners and long-time investigators.
