J D Irwin (who also answers to Julie) was born in West Ham, London in 1964. For Julie, school was more about playing sport than studying. She didn't like reading as a young child, but at ten years old Julie's mother made her read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, and she realised what she'd been missing. It's still one of her favourite books.
Julie spent many years writing very badly for adults, and in 2001 she decided to try something else. She created Edwin Spencer, transported him to the parallel world of Hysteria and told him to get on with saving it.
