Book Description

2 Feb 2009
This comprehensive survey presents the work of John William Waterhouse RA (18491917), one of Britains bestknown nineteenth-century painters. Extensively illustrated with beautiful reproductions which capture the visual impact of Waterhouses large, richly coloured and seductive canvases and studies, the book deals with the artists vision of femininity and his engagement with contemporary concerns, ranging from medievalism to the classical tradition and spiritualism. Waterhouses connections with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the influence of French art of the period are also explored. Edited by the renowned Waterhouse specialist Peter Trippi, this sumptuous book makes a vital contribution to the history of British art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Waterhouse Resource 23 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is the book to accompany the exhibition that was on at The Royal Academy, London.
I have given this book a 4 stars because I believe it to be an excellent resource of Waterhouse paintings. The book is loaded with images and the colour reproductions are of a high quality.
In saying this.... I've taken a star off as another reviewer states, although the images are of a high quality, theyre no way near as vibrant as the original paintings. It's quite disappointing after seeing the paintings at the exhibition.

This is an exhibition catalog, focusing specifically on the works in the exhibition. This might sound limiting, but the exhibition had a superb display, and this book catalogues all of the works in detail. A great introduction to Waterhouse, and a must-have for all fans of Waterhouse and similar artists such as Alma-Tadema. The work is large, and makes an excellent "coffee table" work. I have all other works on Waterhouse in print, and if I had to retain just one, it would definitely be this book.

My expectations of this hardback book were understandably of anticipation and excitement . This book was printed to accompany the travelling exhibition of J.W. Waterhouse ,starting it's tour from Dec 2008 in Groningen, Holland.onto the Royal Academy,London then finally Montreal.
Having purchased this recently, & having seen the second leg of the tour exhibition at the Royal Academy London in June, I expected not least, 'fair' and reasonable Colour Plate reproductions throughout. Alas, I was thoroughly disappointed with what should have been rich vibrant colours as near to the originals ! It fails miserably !
Whomever passed these muted and muddy plates really lets the potential of this otherwise fabulous book down. 'Sumptuous' It isn't.
I'm left dumfounded. I suggest that if you are thinking of buying this book, look inside first and don't presume as I did.

I bought this book (paperback version) after viewing the exhibition of J.W. Waterhouse paintings at the Royal Academy in London. I think the book is really good, it shows plates of all the paintings in the exhibition and also some that were not in the exhibition. The quality of the plates seems fine to me, while the enlarged pictures show the true quality of the paintings as they are now, after all they are over a hundred years old. Looking closely at the original paintings in the exhibtion you can see the cracks in the oil, etc. (maybe some restoration work needed?) If you are interested in Waterhouse's works of art, then this is a good book to purchase. Better still, go see the exhibition as well, if you can.
Yes the book is expensive, that is why I only give it 4 stars, but cost of book is a lot less than one of the original paintings would cost!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the paintings of J.W. Waterhouse.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waterhouse Review 16 July 2009
By Another User - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I've just bought this hardcover book by Peter Trippi and I am impressed with the overall size of each color plates and drawings contained within this book. The color plates could be a little bigger to fit each page, but I guess that's just asking for too much for how many wonderful paintings and drawings are in this book already. Also the cover shown here on Amazon is not the actual cover, it's a cover of the painting "The Lady of Shalott".

4.0 out of 5 stars good, not great 26 Aug 2009

Format:Hardcover
I have seen most of the works here before aside from the drawings. In my opinion, the quality of the prints is better in Trippi's phaidon book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not a compendium of his work 13 April 2012
By J. Morse III - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This was an excellent purchase. I don't think this could be called an exhaustive review of his work, but it is an excellent, well-written illustrated biography. Included are photographs of his studio, the artist, himself, and many of his better-known paintings, along with sketches, studies, and images from painters that influenced him.

I found the book informative and entertaining. As a painter influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, I also found it compelling in a professional sense. For anyone interested in Waterhouse, or the painters who came after the Pre-Raphaelites and were influenced by that group, this book is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tribute To The Modern Pre-Raphaelite 29 Jan 2011
By Mark Roland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was difficult to obtain for several months, but now it is available again. It is a first rate presentation of Waterhouse's paintings, despite the fact it only covered those works in the exhibition. The gatefold plates and oversize details are very welcome, too many art books are content to frustrate the collector with overly small reproductions of gorgeous, highly detailed works. There are some lesser seen paintings among the more well known masterpieces, and a selection of drawings.

What is modern about his work? it is the handling of paint, the looseness of many passages is a stark contrast to the original Pre-Raphaelite school, and their painstaking fidelity to nature. The subjects and visions transport us to an ancient world, but the technique reflects the awareness that a new era and esthetic sensibility had arrived. I recommend this highly to those who are enchanted by the mysterious and melancholy beauty of the women he portrayed, and also those who are curious about the evolution of representational art in the early 20th century.
